Travel Tips for Columbia

Lovely capital city

by acemj

Columbia became the state capital in 1786 and to this day, the State House (that's what they call the capitol building and grounds), is one of the most lovely places in town. I usually park at a meter (free on the weekends) along the Senate Street side of the grounds, where you'll find this sign and many monuments and shady spots to relax.

Historic Columbia

Most of Columbia was burned to the ground during the Civil War (a topic to be avoided no matter what your stance is because it WILL turn into a LOOOOOONG conversation), but two beautiful houses remain. The Hampton Preston Mansion and Gardens and the Robert Mills House and Park are priceless works of architecture and history. Robert Mills was a famous architect of the Federal period, designer, for example, of the Washington Monument.

strom thurmond statue

by doug48

located on the grounds of the south carolina state house is the strom thurmond statue. strom thurmond (1902-2003) was a south carolina governor and u.s. senator. thurmond served in the u.s. senate from 1954 to 2003 and retired when he reached 100 years in age. in 1948 thurmond ran for president on the states rights democratic party ticket which had a segregationist platform. in 1925 thurman had an affair with his parent's black maid carrie butler who gave birth to essie may washington. thurmond finacially supported his daughter until his death in 2003. after thurmond's death washington wrote "dear senator : a memoir by the daughter of strom thurmond". strom thurmond was married to jean crouch from 1926 until her death in 1960. in 1965 thurmond married former miss south carolina winner nancy moore when she was only 22 years old. they were married until thurmond's death in 2003. strom thurmond is a very interesting character in u.s. history.

McKissick Museum

by acemj

The McKissick Museum is located on the "handle" of the Horseshoe and was formerly the main campus library. It is named for J. Rion McKissick and his wife Caroline. McKissick served as the president of the university from 1936 until he died in 1944. Today the museum houses a rather uninspiring collection of Southern folk art, Baruch silver and some other historical artifacts . . . yawn, yawn. Wake me when it's over!

My advice would be to skip this one, but if you insist, the hours are as follows:

Tuesdays - Fridays, 9am to 4pm, Sundays 1pm - 5pm (open until 7 on Thursdays).
