Bar regulations
by b1bob
South Carolina is a very culturally conservative state. It is so much that way that liquor served at bars has to be used only from small glasses, rather like those on the buggy the stewardess rolls through the cabin in flight. This law was imposed in order to more tightly regulate and tax liquor sold in bars. That way, it is harder for bars to water down the drinks or put in too much alcohol.
N.G. Gonzales Memorial Obelisk
by b1bob
What fun would a capital city be without a political scandal? N.G. Gonzales (1858-1903) was shot and killed by Lieutenant Governor James Tillman. The incident was witnessed by a policeman, Tillman was arrested, but he pleaded self-defence saying he believed Gonzales was reaching for a gun. Some say the trial judge was aligned with Tillman and that some jurors were distantly related to the Tillmans. Conspiracy theories abound to this day.

Columbia: South Carolina's Capital City
by acemj
Columbia is only about a hundred miles south of my home in Charlotte, North Carolina and yet I've only been here a few times. My cousin used to go to school down here and she was kind enough to give me a tour of the place. I really like the city's riverside location and sense of history. There are interesting historical markers paying homage to buildings, battle sites and cemeteries spread throughout the city. The zoo is one of the best I've seen I was surprised to discover some great museums and artwork here as well.
More recently (March of 2004), I gave VTer b1bob a tour of Columbia. We had a full day walking around the majority of downtown, visiting the State House and much more. Nat wanted to go visit some of his relatives at Columbia's Riverbanks Zoo, but unfortunately, we ran out of time. ;-)
