Travel Tips for Columbia
Surprisingly artistic
by acemj
I'm not going to claim that Columbia is one of America's great centers of art, but the city does have some surprisingly interesting attractions for anyone interested in the arts.
In addition to the Columbia Museum of Art and the State History Museum, there is the McKissick Museum on the USC campus and other interesting pieces of public art like this one in front of the art museum.
For a list of local art galleries, check this out.
Miyo's/M Cafe
by scbelle about Miyo's/M Cafe
Not your average Chinese Restaurant. The Miyo's/M Cafe experience is more PF Chang than Panda Garden. Miyo's offers more traditional fare, while M Cafe has a more gourmet menu (and will soon finish expansion/renovation). Locally owned and operated, owner Michelle Wang can always be found at one of the restaurants. Delish! Sauteed Chicken and String Beans in Garlic, General Tso's Chicken, Aromatic Pork Chop (M Cafe)
Woodrow Wilson's Boyhood Home
by zrim
Built by President Wilson's father in 1870. Wilson came to Columbia with his family when he was 14 years old. His father accepted a teaching position at Columbia's Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Young Woodrow Wilson only spent a few years at the house in Columbia and I can't say that it is really any type of national treasure. It is pretty much an ordinary house that once housed a U.S. President for a few years. Nothing more, nothing less.
The Governor's Mansion
by acemj
The Governor's Mansion was originally built in 1855 and survived the burning of the city during the Civil War. In 1868, it was turned into the residence for the state's governors and has since house more than thirty. I haven't taken a tour, except online at the site listed below. Tours are by appointment only and can be made through an online booking form on the website or by emailing Nancy Bunch at nbunch@gov.state.sc.us, or giving her a call at 803-737-3000.
