This 85000 seat stadium is the homefield of the University of South Carolina Fighting Gamecocks (I'm not making that up). They haven't been doing well of late, but, like the NFL's Carolina Panthers, there is always hope.
Most people would assume that this interior dome is the same one that you see from the outside, but actually it's not. When you watch the video, you'll see that this dome is actually underneath the larger exterior dome. There is actually a room in between the two structures that is shown in the video. Nevertheless, this dome, which can be seen from the second floor lobby of the building is an attractive architectural feature of the structure.
This park features a large monument and 2 free standing walls with the names of 980 South Carolinans who were killed or MIA in Vietnam. They also have one for the soldiers who lost their lives in Pearl Harbor.
Columbia is the state capital of South Carolina. Since it is the state capital, there is somewhat more activity than a city of its size would expect. Still, it's a sleepy town.
Unfortunately, there is still racial tensions in this city. There are no more lynching. However, a fight about the Confederate flag still lingers today. Only last year, it was flown over the state capitol. Some people argue that it is a symbol of a past government that was involved in massive human rights violations. Others say that it is the symbol of Southern heritage.
Germany has great heritage. They invented the jet engine, a development that help the travel boom (and Virtual Tourist indirectly). They also invented sulfa drugs, one of the first antibiotics. They are home to great cars, like BMW, Mercedes Benz, and Porsche. Do they display their great heritage by flying the Nazi flag? Any Virtual Tourist members from Germany?
