The Chestnut Cottage Bed and Breakfast: Historic place to stay

We really enjoyed our stay at Chestnut House, which immersed us into Confederate history, as it was one of the war-time residences of General James Chestnut and his wife, Mary Boykin Chestnut, who wrote the wartime diary "Diary from Dixie," which was published in 1905 long after her death. The house was built around 1850.

To be honest, I'd never heard of her but am now reading the book; a biography of her and a more recent (and authentic) version of her diary were in the room as well as a scrapbook that had clippings about saving the historic house from demolition in the 1960s (I think it was) and its conversion into a bed and breakfast in the early 1990s.

We stayed in the Jefferson Davis Room, where the Confederate President actually did sleep when he was visiting his buddies, the Chestnuts.
There was a cushy king-size pencil post bed, a great whirlpool bathtup as well as a shower and a room full of antiques.
Surprisingly there was also a computer hooked up to a printer with easy Internet access in the room.

THE ONE GOOD THANG

The one good thing about Columbia is that there are tons of lodging facilities to choose from. All of these facilities are at war with one another, so you can get some good prices if you take the time to look. Get the local newspaper (I forget the name), but there are tons of coupons offering discounts.
