Travel Tips for Columbia

It's Dull in Hell

by Simplysal

I have nothing positive to say about Columbia. I think it is a waste of space and should be annexed to Georgia or something. The people walk around the town like zombies and they are never willing to talk to anyone.

Kid's Day Columbia

by acemj

There were all kinds of healthy, physical activities for kids at the annual Kids Day Columbia that just happened to be going on when Nat and I were visiting. Here's a shot of a little guy attempting to scale a rock climbing wall. I can't remember if he made it up, but I've tried this before, and it's harder than it looks.

Confederate Soldiers' Monument

by b1bob

In a compromise in the 1990s, the legislature voted to remove the Confederate flag from the top of the State House into a park on State House grounds. Some aren't satisfied with that and want it removed from the grounds- if not banned by law. That would be a tragedy from a cultural, historic, and touristic point of view.

Next to nobody is reliving the War for Southern Independence and almost nobody wants to return to the bad old days of segregation. The monument is like any other war monument. Are we expected to sweep the memory of the Confederate soldiers under the carpet? That would be a tragedy from an historical and a touristic point of view. The Confederate flag, to me, represents a Southern way of life which is unique from anywhere else. For example, it is symbolised by the friendly greeting I got upon emerging from the car that morning from a native Columbian whom I didn't know which I mentioned on the homepage (I seriously doubt I would have gotten the same greeting in New Hope, PA), neighbours gathering on a front porch, a slower more relaxed way of life, the Southern accent, and Southern treats like pecan pie and fried chicken. Removing the flag would be nothing more than symbolic. It would not improve anyone's life in any real way- it would just make a few people who look for something to offend them to feel good until they go after the next thing.

South Carolina State Museum

by acemj

Situated next to the Congaree River is this huge museum housed in a historic old textile mill. The museum is dedicated to South Carolina's art, history, natural history and science/technology and many of the displays are hands-on.
