Travel Tips for Edisto Island

Packing List

by Kallie2199

Take whatever you need. Dont over do the luggage. It just makes more work for yourself. Sandles are great for the beach. Well, most people know that already. Loose, comfortable clothing is good also. I would also take a comfortable pair of walking shoes. A must is sunblock if you are like me. I got extremely burnt. The sand is sharp, so bandaids might come in handy. A camera is a must for the beach. I like to take pic of the sunsets. They are awesome!!

Before there were bridges

Highway 174 is the main road on Edisto Island. About 8 miles before you reach the beach you'll pass the historic Presbyterian Church on Edisto Island. Slow down and you'll spot a sign for Steamboat Landing about 3/4 mile past the church. Turn left and follow the paved road. When it ends continue straight on the dirt road. This historic road was once the main entrance and exit for the island leading to the warf (dock) where the Steamboat landed. There is a public landing today and some of the most beautiful oak trees shading a lovely road. Take it slow, the road can get a bit bumpy. And if you have a boat its a great place to launch it while on the island.

"This island is great for shelling"

It's a long drive through the "low country" and marshland until you cross the the bridge to Edisto Island. Anytime during the year there are leaves on the oak trees here so it's always pleasant. The main road takes you to Edisto State Park, which is where you can park and enjoy the beach. This island is noted for the abundance of shells on the beach at any time of the day. This beach is really quite different from Hilton Head and the other nearby beaches. There are jettys and pilings every two or three hundred feet making it necessary to walk around them when strolling on the beach. This was done as an effort to save the beach line from the encroaching erosion problem.

Other than the road that runs parallel to the ocean, all of the roads are canopied by live oak trees and palm trees. Very mysterious and engaging.

Sun and Sand

Edisto Island is not the place for heavy party people and nightclubbers. If, however, you want to drop your stress level down to zero, this is the place. A quiet island that is built on a wetlands and is not overdeveloped, Edisto has open beaches with NO huge highways to cross. Just pull up to the numerous parking areas and walk 10 feet to the beach. A short drive to the West side takes you to the intracoastal where you can watch the sun set and the dolphins feed in the channel a short distance from the beach.

The East side facing the ocean is free of all the overdevelopment common to most of the area. Fifty miles South of Charleston and a bit North of Hilton Head, there are plenty of options for sight seeing or just laze on the beach.

Welcome to my home!

"A place to unwind"

Edisto is visited by people from across the country looking for a place to slow the pace, unwind, and drop their stress levels a bit.

It boasts a good beach, some really good restaurants, some great produce markets with fresh local vegetables, good fishing, and friendly local people.

It doesn't have roller coasters, water slides, large hotels (or any hotels for that matter), or lots of neon and chain restaurants.

Beautiful scenery invites you to ride around the island. The local historic society has a museum open 3 days a week and hosts a tour of historic island homes each October. They also sponsor a special event which includes "a taste of Edisto" in July. The local land trust has done a good job of beginning the process of trying to keep Edisto a lovely, quiet rural sea island.
