gaffney south carolina
"home of the giant peach"
gaffney south carolina is named after irish immigrant michael gaffney. gaffney came to smith ford in 1800 and in 1804 he bought 805 acres of land around present day gaffney. gaffney built a home, store, and a tavern on his property and smith ford was renamed gaffney cross roads. gaffney is best known for the 1981 "peach" water tower located on I-85. there is a lot more to gaffney than the water tower. gaffney has a very nice downtown historic district and 10 miles northwest of gaffney is historic cowpens battlefield national historic park. gaffney is an interesting one mile side trip off of I-85 in northwest south carolina.
