Falls Park on the Reedy
This former industrial area is being transformed into an eclectic part of town, that connects with nature. The Waterfall was 'rediscovered' in 2002, and the pedestrian paths and bridges focus on that.

I am from Maine just outside of Portland and would like to relocate to a place that is warmer but still provides access to outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and kayaking while being affordable. I have done some research on the Greenville, SC area and know that it has many of the qualities that I seek. It's proximity to the mountains and rivers/lakes is a big plus. My biggest concern is being welcome. I would be relocating alone, pretty much starting over. I have read some posts on the web that in parts of the South as a YANKEE I would be tolerated but never really welcome. Would I be better off considering Charlotte, Charleston, or Raleigh since they have populations that are more geographically diverse or is the Greenville area a good choice? Thanks for the advice!
Paul
Maine people are welcome just about anywhere. Maine has a good reputation. You are not considered yankees you are considered hicks from the sticks who add to the mix.
hello paul. in greenville, you would be very welcome because most of the folks who live here are not from the area. greenville has a very diverse population because lots of employers have moved here and have brought along their employees. you would love gville---it's downtown is amazing for a city its size. it has been totally redevloped and has a huge waterfall park in the city center. downtown has lots of living spaces (lofts, condos, etc), eateries, shops, etc. and, we have a great center for the performing arts. you ought to come down for a visit and you will never want to leave. and, you are right about the outdoor activities. the mountains and rivers are just 30 minutes away with lots of opportunities for outdoor activities. there are lots of enthusiasts in the area.
i have never heard anyone talk negatively about folks from the north and in fact, people from other areas, cultures, countries, etc are embraced in greenville, i think. there is a very active international center, also. of the other cities you mentioned, only charlotte MIGHT be more diverse but then you run into terrible traffic, very high cost of living, crime, etc. hope i wasn't too late in posting my feelings about the upstate of south carolina. by the way, greenville is talked about as a smaller charlotte. gatorgal
Hey,
Sorry this is so late, but I just joined this site. I hope you moved to Greenville. That's all I can say. I love the place. At the moment, I'm in Philly attending college. I really miss Greenville. The place is amazingly friendly, and I can guarantee you that you won't be hassled what so ever about being from the North. Greenville is a VERY welcoming community. In fact, I've never felt more isolated and not a part of the group as when I've come to the North. Bottomline - move to Greenville.
I grew up with a lot of outdoor enthusiasts. If that's what you're into, this is the perfect place. You can drive about 30 mins and be in the mountains. Add 15 mins to that, and you'll be camping in the middle of nowhere with just the stars above you. Also in 30 mins, you can go to the lake (we have 3 main ones). If you like hiking, water skiing, rock climbing, etc. THIS IS YOUR PLACE.
Again, hope I'm not too late. Those other towns are nice (especially Charleston), but they don't have the small town charm and welcoming smiles like Greenville.
