Travel Tips for Hilton Head Island

Information about Hilton Head Island, SC

by petewelch

The beach is outstanding - nice and wide, firmly packed sand easy to walk on, and crowded only in certain areas When I cross the bridges to the Island and look out across the water I feel an immediate sense of relaxation. There is much to do, yet nothing has to be done. The Islanders are friendly, Southern and polite and for the most part are unhurried and laid back.
I am surprised by the number of restaurants, including dozens of fine dining locations, and the quality and quantity of golf courses. As a nature lover, I never tire of watcing the Dolphins play in the ocean and the Osprey zooming down for their lunch (the alligators are interesting as well).

Pinkney Island National Wildlife Preserve

We loved this place. After our sea life encounter at the beach we were furthered wowed by the marsh lands and its inhabitants at this wildlife preserve. We road our bikes around here too, and meet and avid bird watcher who directed us to a marshy pond with a white ibis rookery. There were about 100 birds and their young nesting right before our eyes! They didn't seem to be bothered by the snooping. They were well protected by alligators below, which we did not see but the bird watcher told us so. We continued our ride and found a sweet little butterfly garden and a ton of sand crabs all around the ground there. Another great free place with more appeal than fee-based "entertainment".

Harbour Town

by MandaJ320

Harbour town is in Sea Pines, and you'll have to pay to get in. There is a lighthouse, which was never really made to serve any other purpose besides tourism, but it is a landmark of Hilton Head Island nonetheless. Also, you can take sailboat rides from the harbour. I recommend renting a jetskii or taking a sailboat ride, because there are plenty of dolphins in the water, and they are friendly!!! :-)

10 days in South Carolina

by IanDavies

If you like purpose-built destinations or golf then you will like Hilton Head. In some ways it is extremely picturesque but it all seems so contrived.

We spent 3 days of our 10 day trip in Hilton Head and I felt that that was enough, since I don't have kids or like golf or lying around the pool or the beach.

We hired a bike and explored a lot of the island in this way and also by car and enjoyed ourselves immensely but we tend to prefer more natural desinations.

There are some natural attractions, such as the beach and the inlets but the majority of the other places are man-made, including the plantations which could be anywhere in suburban america, except for the disproportionate number of golf courses.

This is a good base to visit places such as Savannah and Beufort, both of which are extremely nice destinations.
