Roach Hotel, Do Not Stay Here!

We booked this hotel despite the reviews because they were suppose to be under renovation. The first bad thing is the parking. It is a huge hotel with only 20 spots or so out front. The parking lot behind the hotel is gated and locked for a condo next to it. They tell you that you have to go down the road for more parking. The pool was shut down the whole time due to cleaning (It was so cloudy it looked gray). They promised it would be open in a little while. That was the same song for 3 days. The stoves in the kitchen did not work. The fridges came out of the ancient times and didn't work either. My wifes family stayed in a room across from us, and had to move 3 times due to roaches. Not just one roach, but over 20 in the first hotel room. Our room was okay until the last day and we had roaches also. When we told the front desk, they supplied us with roach spray. They also said that the roaches were coming in from outside and they can't keep the roaches under control. They said that they spray all the time. Right after my in-laws moved out from the first room, they cleaned it up and moved someone into it immediately. The manager came with the new guests so that we would not say anything. They also only have 2 carts to move your items from your car. We were using one that had a flat tire and they sent another guest to our room to request for the cart back. Overall , this is the worst hotel ever. Take my advice, and do not stay here!

Unique Quality: Great for roaches, apparently.

More about Metropolitan Hotel Hilton Head

simple but did the job for a bargain price!

by A TripAdvisor Member

My partner and I stayed in here for one night in late may, on a trip from the uk. We were travelling from Charlotte to Orlando and wanted to see what 'Hilton Head Island' was like.
I'd seen a description and some coupons for this place and some of its hotels in a discount guide in Charlotte and we thought we'd give it a try as it would suit our travel plans as a good stopover point during the 2 day drive drive.
In a 17 day holiday in which we saw the Smoky Mountains, spent 11 days at a good Walt Disney World resort and 4 nights in Charlotte for the NASCAR race at the luxurious Hyatt hotel - Hilton Head and this hotel were up there and pleased us just us as much if not more so as we werent expecting this gem of a place so it was a real added surprise to our holiday.
We'd allowed for a stopover in each of Savannah and Charleston but Hilton Head changed all that and almost immediately we knew we wanted to stay here.
Hilton Head itself was absolutely fantastic and after spending nearly every holiday of the last 18 years in Florida we will be staying here next time we travel to the States. Its so different to the strip malls and neon of everywhere else I've seen - it made for a real refreshing change.
As for the hotel I'd be a liar if I said it was comparable to Disney or to a Hyatt but when you include cost, as they each cost upwards of £80 / $130 a night, whereas we just turned up at the Hilton Head Plaza unplanned and and used a discount voucher for the room for £30 / $50 especially considering its location as well, right across from the beach, well then it certainly can be compared to them.
As the title says it did the job, the rooms were spacious and the bed comfortable, the hotel perhaps smelt slightly mouldy and looked a tad dated but certainly not enough to bother us, it was fine it really was.
If I was planning a week or a fortnight at hilton head, I might go elsewhere slightly more upmarket and hotel based but for short stays at a good price I don't think there can be much better on the island.

good location at a decent rate

by A TripAdvisor Member

Spent Saturday night here and was very impressed considering the low rate. The room was very large and the location was just across the street from the beach. Parking was a bit limited and the pool was just a pool but overall it was a good experience. I would definately recommend it for a summer beach trip.

Just OK

This hotel could be a great place. Needs updating in nearly every way. The room was large and I had a wrap around balcony. Problem with my room was the smell of mildew and mold. The weather was decent, so I had the balcony door open until I slept, but moved out the 2nd nite because it was too much for me. Old A/C. Also, saw roach and was kinda of creeped out.

Left with a headache and respiratory problems

by A TripAdvisor Member

This place is disgusting. The worst thing about it is the smell. The moldy mildew smell is overpowering and will give you a headache after sleeping in it. We changed rooms twice to try and get away from the smell but we were unsuccessful. The rooms were full of dust and burn holes everywhere. The price is cheap but if your allergenic this place will turn out to be a nightmare. We eventually ended up getting the traveler guide (green book) from the Shoney's in Hardeeville and stayed in the Holiday Inn Express on Hwy 46 for $10 more. That place was alot nicer and newer. The Hilton Head Plaza should be condemmed it's so old and disgusting. Hope this helps.

Wonderful

This is a great place to stay. Staff is friendly and the rooms are great. The beach is about a block away down a pathway..but just great.
It has a restaurant and bar in the lounge area...which is terrific...

Will Never Stay Again!

by A TripAdvisor Member

We stayed at this hotel last year and had a very wonderful stay. We were hoping to experience the same this year but left with disappointments! The parking lot has trash that was not pick-up since we arrived. The bathrooms in the common area is very dirty. It looks like it was not clean on a daily basis. The carpet in the hallways is soiled and has a musty smell. The first room where we checked-in has a mildewish smell and the refrigerator has a leftover food from the previous guest. The bathroom in the second room has hair in the bathtub and we found dead roach in the kitchenette area. We were moved 3 times before we settled in. The original reservation was for 5 nights and we ended up staying for one night. I could not stand the ambience of the hotel. Also, there were young kids running back and forth and making a lot of noise. The management did not do anything about our concerns. This only shows that nobody seems to care about the hotel.

I would not recommend this hotel to anybody! Go to Comfort Inn, which is on the same block and has much nicer and cleaner rooms.

Not too bad

We stayed here for 4 days and we had no problems with the hotel. The staff was friendly and the rooms were pretty big. It is pretty much right across the street form the ocean. I would stay here again.

This place is a crackhouse! Literally!

What I had planned as a nice family weekend turned into a nightmare. When arriving at the "plaza" we were greeted by a disgruntled employee who acted like reservations was a word we had made up. When we finally got into our room we were pleased to find no pillows, towels, shower curtains, working phone, or air conditioning. We were seriuosly mislead by the ad had we known we were going to a survival fitness weekend we would have brought our own camping supplies. When I went to the front desk to ask about the air conditioning the same disgruntled employee pulled out a junky fan and said "here's the a.c.."The worst part was the noises coming from the meth lab next door, I had to tell my 14 yr old son not to listen to the screaming. When we tried to check out the same digruntled employee who obviously doesn't enjoy scrabble, informed us that there was no manager on duty or ever will be and when I asked for a number he said no phone calls. The grand finale came when we were packing up and five cop cars, an ambulance, and firetruck arrived to help with the drug bust that was happening next to our room. I'd rather be drugged naked in a pile of glass and salt than stay here ever again.

Smoke smell gisgusting

by A TripAdvisor Member

I felt the place reeked of smoke. The bar did not have time to fix a blended drink, the 7 customers overwhelmed them. In the rooms there was dust under the small table, behind the tv and sunflowers seeds all over the floor, I don't eat sunflowers seeds. The fitness center was in another location and very hard to find (1 1/2 blocks away). There was maybe 20 parking spots for a hotel with 5 floors.
