Compass Cove Above Par for Eight Golfers
by TripAdvisor Member eclipsebigdog
We just returned from a four days, four rounds and four really good buffet breakfasts. We were provided nice lodging, good parking, good access to the rooms, very nice view, a hot water spa and swimming pool.
We had about fifty golf courses to choose from, green fees and cart, and tee times within a half hour of requested time. What did we pay?
$169.42 each, that's all including tax and everything. We all felt we were getting a bargain, this was eight men no wifes so that might be the difference from other reviews. We are thinking about doing it again next year..maybe twice...
Amazing hotel

I just returned from a vacation at the Compass Cove. There were 7 of us so we had 2 rooms(Oceanview room and on Oceanfront room). We were thrilled with both rooms as well as the hotel itself. The view was spectacular and more than I could've ever asked for. The beach and pool areas were very clean and well maintained. Never a shortage of things to do. My only complaint would be that since we were visiting in the beginning of march the pools weren't open even though the weather was abnormally warm. Though, after questioning the front desk about this they immediately told me I was welcome to use the pools and they were opened. I Have recommended the Compass Cove to friends and family and I am hoping to return next year.
Decent price, not so great hotel.

Stayed at the Compass Cove for two years. The first year, our room was over the restaurant and smelled like hamburgers the entire week. The second year, our sink was continually stopped up and the sliding door broke. The bathroom was really small and the lighting was poor. Also, everything is very crowded. The rooms are a decent price, but next time I will spend a little extra on a nicer hotel.
Whata place

As a group, we have been coming to the Cove for about 15 years. I still sometimes call it Swamp Fox. During these woulderful years I can't remember a time that the staff could'nt do enough for you. Everything from your greating every morming at breakfast to the outstanding golf courses. Add all that to the new condo's and this place is every golfer's dream! I have golfed all over the world in no finer place.
Thanks you Swamp Fox, sorry, Compass Cove.

Have visited Compass Cove 5 separate times. All was well until most recent trip in Sept. Kitchen sparsely equipped---had to purchase items.
Cookware in poor condition. Rooms in South Tower have definitely declined and housekeeping was terrible. Called desk 6 times for basic room care---trash removal.clean linens, etc. over a 2 week time frame.
Had specifically requested exact dates of Harley-Davidson Rally as I did not want to be there at that time---was told it was the end of the month. I therefore booked the first 2 weeks and guess what? Roaring bikes all night long and all day long. Not joyful. Will reconsider before booking again. All improvements have been directed toward new building. Parking has worsened. What was once a great place needs more consideration or fewer "old timers" will be renewing. Sorry.
Our best vacation ever

My wife and I (and another couple) just returned last night from the Compass Cove and Myrtle Beach. It was our first time and we were just floored. We usually go to Ocean City, Md but will come to Myrtle from now on. Everything newer and nicer. The Compass was great - we were on the 12th floor of the Pinnacle building and had an awesome view from the balcony - had coffee every morning while watching the sun come up.
The room was nice but how much time do you really spend in it. The hot tubs were awesome - we were in each one and the big lazy river was great. I don't know what hotel the negative reviewers were in but it makes you wonder. I highly recommend the Compass. If you have any questions about the hotel or Myrtle Beach (take a side trip to Charleston - you won't regret it) just email me.
Disappointed

My husband, daughters, and I took our first official vacation in August 2003. We went to Myrtle Beach and stayed at the Compass Cove. It is a motel with 3 seperate buildings. My mother and sisters usually go and stay there, but they stay in the Pennicle building. We were unlucky enough to reserve a room in the motel thinking that all three buildings would meet the same standard of quality. The room was poor at best. The lighting was almost nonexistant. We asked for cups for our room and were told they were not provided. We asked for extra towels so we could take showers after we came out of the ocean and were given half of what we needed with an explanation of needing enough for the rest of the guests (there are only 4 of us). The cable didn't work for longer than 5 minutes at a time. You had to jiggle the cable to get it to come in.
We asked to switch rooms and were told there were none available, but maybe in a few days. I had to do some laundry while we were there and was absolutely disgusted at what I found. The floor and walls were filthy. The side wall where the pipe came out was covered in mold and a slimey green algae where the piped leaked and had not been cleaned in so long. I was scared to touch the walls or sit down it was so dirty.
The room was far below any quality I would have expected for the price that we paid. The view of the ocean was nice, and having so many pools available was also nice, but I wouldn't stay in that building of the Compass Coves' agian and I would recommend that they bring it up to the standards they meet in their other accommodations. I did write them a detailed letter concerning all of this and got no responce.
Great place / value

Fantastic hotel, very nice staff. We have stayed at a number of places in Myrtle Beach, and this was one of the better ones for the price range.
Joke

You've gotta be kidding me. I moved the fridge and the biggest cochroaches I every saw darted for the patio doors. Whoever gave it a 5 star rating must own the place.
