Atlantica ruined my vacation!!!!

by A TripAdvisor Member

Upon arrival, room was dirty, terrible smell to room, pool was dirty and hotel was busted for allowing people to party and smoke, which later involved police knocking on hotel rooms with a K-9 unit at 4am. Money not refunded for unused days when we left due to worry for safety of our kids! When I apporached management about this situation, front desk personnel quickly became defensive and obnixous, stating that refunds are not given. I feel that this hotel is not providing adquite safety and security for younger guests. Please think long and hard about allowing your kids to visit this hotel.

Don't be fooled ...

When leaving for the beach I felt assured we had booked a nice hotel. Considering we had the penthouse, we assumed it would be nice. I was wrong! Staying at the Atlantica was $2,000 waste! The furniture was nasty and ripped. Even worse, only one elevator works throughout the hotel, and was often closed, leaving us to walk 14 flights of stairs. When we were fortunate enough to ride the elevator, it smelled like urine. Not to mention, the stair well smelled bad too. For what they charge, you do not recieve quality.

Ripped Off

The hotel didn't provide clean sheets, towels, maid service as promised. On check out they tried to keep our $400.00 damage deposit because there was a hole in the wall, that was documented upon check-in, but they "couldn't find" the check in form. Only after a phone call from one of my friends father did they find the report that documented the hole. Next they took the sheets off of the bed (which they didn't do upon check in) saw a stain, said we caused it, and kept $200.00 of our deposit.

There were 5 girls in this room who don't drink, smoke or party. This place makes it's money by ripping off teenagers.

DO NOT STAY HERE. If you do, document every piece of dirt you find, strip the bed, open all the cupboards, make a complete inventory of anything wrong, then demand a copy of the signed check in report.

The price was decent.

My dad stayed at the Poindexter when he helped me move into my new apartment here in Myrtle Beach. It was basic and served the purpose. As I read the reviews I can't help but feel that some come to the beach misinformed or a little less than hip to the hotel "lingo". I would like to clarify any misconceptions as I have now been a local for 3 years and have become much more familiar with the Myrtle Beach Hotel/Motel Industry. (I don't work for the Poindexter, however.)

1. If you want to SEE the ocean- always and only choose a room that is OCEAN FRONT. "Ocean view" can mean the side of the hotel, or even across the street. (i.e. You can view the ocean if you crane your neck to the side and use a pocket mirror while nearly careening off your balcony... that is if you have a balcony. )

2. This is not always the case, but unless you've found a tried and true hotel, go with a new one. Even those hotels that have been "renovated" may have just been "renovated" in the lobby area or in certain rooms only. There is always a chance that you will get the scuzzy room that was passed over and hasn't been updated since 1942. Many hotels are very nice, but in the magazine they ALL look nice. To be safe, get something new.

3. To satisfy the aforementioned standards you will pay lots of $$$. Don't expect to pay on the beach what you would pay at your local Holiday Inn. As the old addage goes, if it seems too good to be true, then it probably is. Having said that, I will go on to define lots of $$$... generally an A+ room or 1 bedroom in Myrtle Beach during peak season will cost you about $200- $250 per night conservatively.

4. ASK for the BEST rate. Call months in advance to assure you get the best rate. Just because everyone else is paying a small fortune doesn't mean that you have to. Explore the various avenues that the rooms are being sold. If you book on-line make sure you understand exactly what you're getting. Call the hotel first. See if they can match the price you see on-line. Sometimes they can even do better. Make sure you are aware of ALL of the costs in advance. If you have to pay additional fees for linens and maid service later it may not be such a great deal after all.

5. I hate to say this, but from personal experience, you may not find the same quality stay that you may find at the exact same hotel back home. Many dismiss incompetence of maid service or quality hotel personnel as "hey- it's the beach". Unfortunately this attitude has lingered with many hotels and can shed a poor light on all of them. I don't know what else to say there except to read the reviews and read them well. They are not exaggerations.

Well, I hope that all of that helped to clarify some fuzzy points for first timers or anyone who has gotten burned. For the Poindexter we paid just over $150 per night and had an efficiency. It was not a fancy beautiful suite with a whirlpool tub that I could have got up north in the middle of nowhereville for the same rate. It was clean and it was basic and we payed entirely for location. (It was a wonderful view.)

Please Don't Stay Here!

We stayed at the Poindexter in July 2004. We had made reservations for two adults and one child for an ocenfront deluxe room on a higher floor. When we arrived we were given an oceanfront deluxe room on the ground floor. Since we were on the ground floor, directly in front of the pool, we couldn't see the ocean. We asked to look at the room before we paid. When we went back to the front desk we were assured the first thing the next morning we would be given a room on the fifth floor that was an oceanfront deluxe. Since it was the last week of July we knew we would have trouble finding another oceanfront room so we decided to stay with the assurance that we would be changed to the fifth floor the next morning. The next morning we awoke and went to the front desk. The manager was there so we told the manager what we had been told. We were then told that the guy who told us that was wrong and there wouldn't be a room on the fifth floor open for us unless we wanted to switch rooms every night that we were there - that would be eight nights total. We didn't want to have to switch rooms eight nights in a row so that wasn't even an option. We explained how the guy the day before had told us that we would be able to have a room on the fifth floor for our entire stay and also how we were assured on the telephone that we would have an oceanfront deluxe room on a higher floor for our entire stay. The manager told us there was nothing we could do and there was no way that we could get our money back. So, if we would've decided to leave to hotel it would've been a huge financial loss to us.

To add to our problems, the room needed a good scrubbing. We couldn't had asked for a nicer maid. She was very nice and came to our room each day to clean. However, the floors at the Poindexter looked as if they had never been properly cleaned and that they needed a good scrubbing. The corners of the bathroom floors were filthy.

The first night we were there we went to the indoor pool. We decided to get out of the indoor pool located in the registration office because it was so filthy that you couldn't see the bottom. When we went to get into the hot tub there was dirt everywhere and the sides looked as if they had never been cleaned properly. They also needed to be scrubbed - very hard scrubbing. We thought that maybe the pools would be at least vacumned out the next morning - but they never were.

Our second day there we went outside to the pools. They were also filthy. There were only a few people out at the pools when we went out so we knew that the filth of the pools wasn't because of the few people that were out at them. The hot tubs were also filthy. You could see the scum built up on the sides of the pools and the hot tubs. We also noticed that the police were called out our second day there for some reason.

Our third day there we went out to my new car and the center part of my rim was missing. I had checked my car the night before to make sure that everything was intact and the center part was not missing the night before. We went to the front office to ask them to call the police but they didn't have to. The police were already there assisting another family staying at the motel so after they were finished with that family they assisted us in making a report. While we were in the front office we overheard an argument with the front desk because another family had been given the wrong room and had been guaranteed the room that they wanted when reserving it over the telephone. After our report was taken we returned to my car to go on with our plans for the day. That afternoon we returned and walked to the main part of Ocean Boulevard. When we returned we saw that the police had been called out to the Poindexter again. That was the third time in one day.

I am going to stop my review at this point. I think that you can tell by my review that we will never stay at the Poindexter again. The only nice thing that I have to say about the Poindexter is that the maid was a very nice person.

Go ahead and pay $100.00 extra dollars for your total hotel cost and stay somewhere nice. Or, if you're looking for a low price and a friendly hotel stay at Catoe Villa Motel. I stayed there as a child and checked it again while in Myrtle Beach this year and it is still very clean and the people are extremely nice. Check their reviews on www.tripadvisor.com and you will see that they have all positive feedback. Just don't stay at the Poindexter. You will be greatly disappointed if you do.

My husband and I stay at the Yachtsman. It has an indoor pool and hot tub & 2 pools outside and 2 hot tubs outside. I really like the hotel it is on North Myrtle Beach and all of the rooms have a small kitchen in them.

Hi there,
I'm an NC native whose been to Myrtle Beach quite a few times. It's a fun place for vacations, better in the non-tourist season when you'll be there. Sadly, the beach water is definitely not swimmable in Septmeber unless it's unusually warm. The city's website says low 70sF is the average water temp in late September but my experience argues for lower. This past year on the coast our winter was much longer and colder than normal, thus it may set in earlier this year as well. Also, you'll be in SC during hurricance season so keep evacuation plans in mind with your travel plans. Unlikely, but serious if it happens.
Their website is here: http://www.cityofmyrtlebeach.com/weather.html
Best of luck with your trip!
