2011 Holiday

Thinking of Orlando, Charleston and Myrtle Beach next April (travelling from the UK). What's the temperture like in South Carolina in April? Is Charleston worth a visit and what is there to do in Myrtle Beach? Travelling with 19 year old son so cultural is probably not a good idea. Shopping and theme parks will be of more interest to him! Any advice on where to stay? Is Orlando to Charleston driveable? I would be grateful for any advice. We have done Orlando so have a good idea about hotels etc there but South Carolina is an unknown.

April should be pleasant in the mid 70's degree F.

Things to do: nice beaches, lots of golf courses, shopping, shows, water park, mini-golf, fishing, go-carts.

For 19 year old, you may consider Virginia Beach or colonial Williamsburg. Amusement parks in Williamsburg include Bush Garden & Water Country. Six-flag amusement park is another 1-1/2 hours away.

Bring Key West a few miles north

This pplace had a great seafood menu, not to mention a killer NY Strip as well. I sat at the bar and started off with some very tasty and potent margaritas, moving on to the great house bread and salads and then to my persoanl favorite, the Mahi, with a splash of lime... this place is hard to miss with its neon green sign right in the center of Broadway on the Beach, so make sure you stop in and eat before you take in all those drinks! I really enjoyed the Mahi, but the NY Strip was exceallent as well.

Fossil tooth hunt

Hunting for shark teeth and other fossils along the beach is great fun. You are not likely to find any 15 cm (6") megalodon (ancient great white) chompers but 2.5 cm (1") sand shark teeth are a possibility. I found the smaller (pointy) tooth to the right of the photo on the beach at Huntington National Park. The squiggly bone is from the ear of an ancient whale.
