In 1931, they built it into a non-profit institution to be a showcase for American sculpture and wildlife refuge for native plants and animals. Three hundred acres were set aside for sculpture exhibition and grounds development, opened to the public in 1932. It is the first (and best) sculpture garden in the United States and is designated a National Historic Landmark.
