Cottage at the Edisto River
My hostfamily had a cottage at the Edisto River, where we spent quite a few weekends!
The Edisto River Basin is a rich landscape which has been inhabited for at least ten thousand years!
The Edisto is a blackwater river system, which means that the water has a dark tea color. This is because the water is stained by chemicals such as tannins which derive from tree leaves and other organic material decomposing in the surrounding swamps.
The Edisto River with about 310 river miles is one of the longest free-flowing blackwater rivers in the United States!
