"york"
york is located at the intersection of US 321 and SC 5 in north central south carolina. the area around york was originally inhabited by the catawba native american tribe. the first european settlers moved to the area in the 1750's. york was originally called fegus crossroads after william and john fergus who had a tavern near the site of downtown york. in 1785 york county was established and yorkville became the county seat. the town of yorkville was incorporated in 1841. the name yorkville was shortened to york in 1915. of interest to the tourist is it's beautiful downtown historic district which is listed on the national register of historic places. downtown york has a large collection of historic buildings and homes. york is worth a side trip off of I-85 for those interested in architecture and southern culture.
