SOUTH DAKOTA WEATHER TIDBITS
I have noticed a lot of these guides aren't too specific about weather..and since the weather affects my health quite drastically, I felt I oughtta add some weather info here.
Spring is nice but unpredictable...one day may be lovely & warm, the next pouring rain, windy or snowing. Currently, (this is March 2004) it has been from 12 degrees some nights to 71 degrees during the days....a lot of 35 to 55 degree days and interspersed with snow, rain & wind.Today, March 27, it was a torrential downpour and is gloomy and cold, yesterday was around 55 and extremely windy. Next week expects above normal temps which would mean it will probably be around 65 to 70 degrees. Some years we have snow & rain all thru march. April is unpredictable as well. July & august are generally very hot and humid...we use our a.c. constantly during those months. The nights may be humid & stifling, yet some are quite cool and lovely. September is quite nice without as much extreme in temps and october is usually rainy, damp & windy. From january thru the end of february it is brutal...lots of snow generally, very high winds and icy roads. The sun doesn't shine much so it begins to feel very doomy! A lot of people here use sun bulbs to combat SAD (seasonal affective disorder) due to the lack of sunshine. We are pretty big on having lots of houseplants as well. I don't know many people who don't have DVD's galore for the long winters and a fave winter activity is house parties, gathering to watch movies, hitting the malls & going out to see live entertainment...that is, if the roads are manageable & the bands or entertainment can get here! You must be hardy & hale to endure the winters here but it's a pretty safe region with regard to crime and the people are slower paced than in the cities. It's a real good idea to own at least one four-wheel-drive vehicle here!
