time of year

If you are thinking about coming to the Black Hills of South Dakota, Then June or July is the Time. Usually you can get reservations at most hotel/motel, bed and breakfasts. If you choose to wait until august, there may not be any accomodations. You see there is a motorcycle rally in Sturgis, South Dakota the second week in august, so almost all of the rooms are taken for years in advance for about a 100km radius. Also if you come earlier; there are far less people.

Go to Custer State Park. The scenery and the wildlife are worth it. Sylvan Lake is one of the trailheads for
a hike to Harney peak, the highest in South Dakota and
the highest between the Rockies and the Pyrenees. If you drive the Needles Scenic Highway through the park,
you will be awed not only by the granite spires, but by
the feat of engineering it took to construct these roads.

Driving through this area of the country, you are assaulted by signs pointing you to the most famous attraction in this neck of the woods, Mt. Rushmore. Carved by Sculptor Gutzon Borglum in 1927, he began drilling into the 6,200-foot mountain. Creation of the Shrine to Democracy took 14 years and cost a mere $1 million, though it's now deemed priceless.
Mount Rushmore National Memorial, surrounded by the Black Hills National Forest, is 25 miles southwest of Rapid City, South Dakota, via U.S. 16; and 3 miles from Keystone via U.S. 16A and SD 244. You can read more at:

Packing List

A backpack or a lumbar pack with water-carrying capacity if a good idea in summer. The weather in summer is generally very warm during the day and pleasantly cool at night. The Black Hills do experience sudden thunderstorms, so some kind of rain gear is a good idea, even if it is the $1.99 rain poncho from a convenience store. I would bring some black and white film...there are a lot of Ansel Adams moments (of course on a smaller scale) to be found in the Black Hills. Bring water bottles and a big water jug. Most of the State and National Forest Campgrounds have a water spigot, but no shower facilities. One of those 'Solar Showers' would be a great thing to bring. Bring your mountain bike or hiking boots. There is so much public access to land out here that you can't see it in one trip, but it sure is fun to try.
