If you like to camp, there are...

If you like to camp, there are several options. We camped in Custer State Park at Stockade Lake. The campsites were beautiful and there are warm showers and flushing toilets. The campsite was about $14/night. If you don't care about the amenities, Black Hills National Park at Bismark Lake is wonderful also. There are also some private campgrounds around Custer (the town and the park) but I haven't stayed at any of these, so I can't recommend one.

If you want a hotel room, there are many options. The city of Custer, SD is probably the closest to the monument. The Sunmark Inn in Custer looked clean and they advertised at $49/night. I also spotted a Days Inn in Custer that looked nice and there are many non-chain options. At any of the non-chains, I would recommend that you ask to see a room before you put down your money. Most are probably fine, but a few looked shady.
