The beautiful lodge was created by Frank Lloyd Wright. The location was perfect, we were in the heart of Custer Park minutes from Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse. We walked down to Sylvan Lake which was just beautiful. We were minutes from the eye of the needle, all of the beautiful tunnels through the rocks, and there were animals along the way.
Our room was small but we didn't spend much time there. Our bathroom was equally very small. We were facing the lake but couldn't see it. Cell phone service and wireless internet was pretty spotty at the Lodge and in the park.
The phone in our room was dead throughout our stay, there was no attempt to repair it. Honestly, we would NEVER have stayed here if we knew that we could not be reached by phone. Upon making reservations we asked for the mailing address and phone number at Sylvan Lake Lodge; both were of the Custer State Park Resort.
Breakfast was not included; we could not order a la carte. The breakfast buffet was $9.00 p.p and was the usual holiday inn type of continental breakfast.

Quietly nestled among the pine trees high in the Black Hills of Custer State Park. Rustic, timbered lobby with evening entertainment. Great food includes native wildlife. Enjoy your meal on the stone patio overlooking Sylvan Lake. Not far from Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse, but peak summer traffic can make it a long drive.
Just southeast of Harney Peak, Sylvan Lake is one of the more popular areas of Custer State Park. The area around the lake is an appendage off the main Park, connected by a narrow corridor around the Needles Highway - SD 87. The lake is very popular with campers, picnickers, and swimmers. There is a beautiful lodge - the Sylvan Lake Lodge - where you can stay if you didn't bring your tent. The most popular trail - besides the one going around the lake - is marked by tree blazes with the number '9' - starting here and topping out atop Harney Peak in three miles.
