We stayed at the Franklin hotel which is a historic hotel in Deadwood. The hotel is over 100 years old and the hotels entrance and lobby gives it the old west feel. The casino area at the Silverado sister building has crystal chandeliers and red curtains. There are various slots and tables open here. Remember to get your discount coupons from the Franklin and use them. There is a coupon that if you give the cashier $20 you get $22 back and you don’t have to play to get it. While sitting at the slot you are offered wine, soda and well drinks for tips. In addition you have 2 free drink coupons to use if you don’t want to play. At the table you can use a coupon that if you play $5 you get $10 back. Also, at this sister hotel is a buffet for $13 and you guessed it there is a coupon for a dollar off that. Prime rib that is about $12 a pop by it’s lonesome usually, and is offered at this buffet;)
The Franklin is located in the middle of town. As for the rooms themselves don’t expect 5 star quality. We stayed in the railroad room. The doors are wooden and may have their original key type locks in them. The room was small, there was plaster patched up on the ceiling and the floors creaked. However, I guess that is what gave this room its charm.
There are different name plaques on different door for famous people who stayed at the hotel. Look for names like Babe Ruth, Willie Nelson and Kevin Costner on the doors. We posed at some of the doorways. If you are tired or don’t want to play at the casino try the Pinball machine monopoly on the Franklin’s second floor.
One final thing when you get here walk around deadwood. You can find cool old buildings and pose next to the salon. While walking we found a place with a model train set that you put in quarters to see it move. If you get here while there is still light out catch the $1 trolley to see the town.
The Franklin Hotel is history. I did not get a chance to go in but it was a very busy place the day we were there.
If you want a feel for the rich feel of the west stay here. It even smells old. We had an old upright piano in our room with a bar. There's even an elevator operator in a very old elevator to take you up and down. Advice; don't carry very heavy luggage haha!
