my car is the red blob near the lake by caffeine_induced78 I woke up at 4 in the morning on an August day. I walked out of my tent to the picnic table and lit a cigarrette. The Milky Way was stretched above me and I didn't realize it was the peak of a meteor shower until I saw the rapid rate of shooting stars. All around me was the sound of a gentle breeze playing music on the prarie grass around me.
I have to say that the State Parks in South Dakota are something the State should be very proud of. They have a range of accommodations from basic tent sites for 6 to 15 dollars and ready-for-you permenent cabins from 32 to 37 dollars (with heat!). You also have to pay a park entrance fee of 3 dollars in addition to your camping fees.

After we left the horrible campground we went to the nearest motel we could find that had a room available, the "Budget Host Inn" about a mile outside of the Bandlands entrance in Interior. The owners of the motel were very friendly and gave us a room with a nice view of the Bandlands on the second floor. Thankfully it had air conditioning. The motel had a pet buffalo and a horse and the kids got some "buffulo fur" from the owner. The food was homecooked, a choice of a very large pot of buffalo stew, burgers , or hot dogs. I had the stew with corn bread. It was very good. The room was nothing spectacular but for that price and in that location you can't complain.
Great view of the badlands, nice owners, great homecooked food!

by bebop88 There are lots of cabins available in the black hills region
I recommend getting a cabin rather than just staying at a hotel, because it's just like being at home. You usually get more room with a kitchen, living room and separate bedrooms so its much more relaxed than staying in a cramped motel room. Good camping in the park, but no showers. We hadn't had one in a week so stayed at the private campground for good reason. Sometimes you have to sacrifice scenery for getting clean . . . $15
Meteor showers if you're lucky. Theme: CampgroundComparison: least expensiveOther Contact: (605)433-5337

Badlands Campground by Florida999 DON'T Go there in July!!!! It was just too hot. We did not have a reservation for this campground, but there were plenty of empty sites. Not surprising , considering it was 120 degrees outside at one time during that day, there was no water available, and the toilets had yellow tape draped around them..... We set up our tent anyway, but the almost comatose Park Ranger told us the machine we had to put the money in didn't work and we should do it later in the day, when the sun went down. After a short hike, we decided this was not the place we were going to spend the night. We packed back up and left. We had a beautiful campsite with a resident deer and a great view after just a short hike to the top of the hill. The only problem was that we had to carry everything up a steep hill (not very far) from the parking lot below. But, we did have the nicest and most private campsite. Wrangler Inn at the edge of town by riorich55 Nice size rooms in a small town hotel. Each room includes a microwave and mini fridge that you can stock from one of the 2 grocery stores in town. Indoor pool was large enough. Exercise equipment was old and run down. Staff was friendly. Restaurant and bar onsite. Indian Casino located about 5 miles away. Great fishing almost outside your front door

View from Hotel Room by Florida999 We spent one night in the Holiday Inn , downtown Sioux Falls. It was a nice, typical Holiday Inn, but more expensive than what I like to spend on a hotel. You don't even get anything for breakfast, unless you pay extra for it. But it did have a nice pool area and exercise room. We had a problem finding it, because the Interstate exit was closed at the time due to construction, and the detour signs did not help.
Nice pool!

Keystone by tompt If you are visiting Mt Rushmore stay the night in Keystone. It is close to the rock and that way you can see Mt Rushmore at night when it is in spotlights. Keystone has several hotels and motels. Theme: Motel
