Custer/Mount Rushmore KOA: Bring the Family

by hey_daddy_o

After "roughing it" in state parks, the kids will sing songs of praise about you (you'll have avoided mutiny for sure), as you pull in. Even tenting is nice here. Good people. Nice facilities. Clean and central to everything. This is a winner.

I was most impressed by the huge pancake breakfast cooked by the hosts. It was ridiculously inexpensive and equally impressive. Nice showers and laundry facilities. Makes for the perfect road trip. The staff are local experts on many fun things. There's even a nice selection of books on local subjects to help the relaxation process. They've thought of everything.

Super 8 Sturgis: Fancy Super 8 in Sturgis

by Basaic

The Super 8 in Sturgis is a bit fancier than the average Super 8. It had the usual ammenities like the small refrigerator and a microwave but also had a hot tub with mirrors around it in the room. The room was also fairly large.

Hot tub with mirrors. Located at the gateway to the beautiful Black Hills.

Comfort Inn and Suites: A quiet part of Custer

by 807Wheaton

We used this Comfort Inn as our hub for a three night visit in the Mount Rushmore area. There are plenty of places to eat nearby and lots of choices in the town of Custer. Check in went fine - we were really impressed by the friendliness of people in South Dakota.
We had a good size room in the back that overlooked the trees and hill and it was very quiet. We were able to open the window at night and enjoy the cool temps with no noise. The bathroom was clean and had hand lotion, shampoo and hair conditioner. Also the towels here are fluffy and white. Never once did we get a thin towel. There was no fridge or microwave in the room, which was too bad because we were there 3 nights and couldn't keep cold drinks or fruit cooled down. There were plenty of electrical outlets in the room and all the lightbulbs worked. They also have a good size indoor pool and hot tub here. The pool was clean and hardly used while we were there. They provided towels at the pool so we didn't have to take our room towels. They have an adult only swim after 10 PM.
The one computer they have is in the lobby but that too was not used very often so it was easy to check email and travel information.
Breakfast was the same all three days which surprised me and was somewhat disappointing for an extended stay. The main item was biscuits with white sausage gravy all three days. The only eggs they served were hard boiled. They had a make your own waffle area and we had that with blueberry syrup one morning. They also offered brown sugar with the instant oatmeal. They had canned fruit cocktail for their fruit. They had assorted juices and assorted flavors for the coffee cream. They also offered bagels, bread for toast and sweet rolls and doughnuts. No yogurt here.
The room was cleaned up early each day, so we were able to relax when we came back from our scenic drives and activities. There was plenty of parking here. Other than the monotonous breakfast, I would certainly recommend this Comfort Inn & Suites.

It was very quiet here and we enjoyed a nice view of the tree covered hill from our window.
We don't usually get a nice view using a Seniors Rate. Thanks Comfort Inn!

Best Wester Wranger Inn: On The Shores of Lake Oahu

by riorich55

Nice size rooms in a small town hotel. Each room includes a microwave and mini fridge that you can stock from one of the 2 grocery stores in town. Indoor pool was large enough. Exercise equipment was old and run down. Staff was friendly. Restaurant and bar onsite. Indian Casino located about 5 miles away. Great fishing almost outside your front door

KOA-Badlands/White River, SD: Great Campground

by eveelynn

Very nice campground, very nice people. We rented a cabin for a week, great stay.

In the Badlands! Wonderful scenery. Remote campground, private.

KOA-Custer, SD: Nice Campground

by eveelynn

We rented one of the two room cabins this year, and a one room cabin a year ago. The people were great, the campground is very nice. The bathrooms are clean and close by.

Swimming pool during summer, cook outs. Lots of trees! Beautiful. Right on the edge of town, close to everything!

Blue Bell Lodge/Cabins: Very Poor Service

by eveelynn

I reserved a cabin with three beds in Feb. for the following October, 2006, (for the annual Buffalo Roundup). I got a call in August from the hotel stating I may lose my reservation for "no show". They booked me for the end of August instead of beginning October. They blamed me for the mistake, even though I specifically asked for reservation during Buffalo Roundup. Because they messed up the reservation, we had to take a much smaller cabin with only ONE bed in it.

The following year, and I made reservations for a week in a cabin with FOUR beds for beginning October during the Buffalo Roundup 2007. Everything seemed to be okay until we arrived at the resort. We were told our cabin had a "plumbing problem" and we could have a cabin with TWO beds instead, "at no extra charge". I told them we needed FOUR beds as originally reserved. I refused to take a smaller cabin AGAIN this year because of their problem. They reluctantly gave us two cabins, but we had to be ready to move at a moment's notice. On day 2 we came back from a day of sight seeing to LOCKED cabins. Our belongings were inside. Luckily, we came back before the lobby of the resort closed. The desk person stated she cut the card keys for one day in case our original cabin was repaired. What if we had not returned until after the lobby closed?

On the next day we were told the original cabin needed so much repair that we could keep the present arrangements. Day 4 we spent the entire day visiting the Badlands and didn't return to the park until after 10pm. The lobby was closed and there were notes on our cabins to go to the lobby before that night. I went to the desk at 8am and I was told that we had to be out of both cabins by 10am because guests with reservations were coming! Supposedly, our original cabin was miraculously repaired. I told them we'd be checking out instead and I'd had enough of this. The desk person gleefully agreed, no apology.

I wrote to the people in charge and not even so much as an apology was given, I was ignored. We won't return. It's too bad because the cabins are very nice and the park is wonderful. But the people who work for the resort are terrible.

Quality Inn, Spearfish: Forget it

by kop-queen

We stayed approx half an hour which was how long it took to check our booking and leave. I had booked a non-smoking room on line but when we entered the room it smelt like an ashtray. I went straight back down to reception to be told the booking had not asked for non-smoking and nothing else was available. On returning to the room and throwing open the windows I managed to pick up an internet signal and found the booking confirmation and guess what....? We returned to reception again with the evidence and were then found an alternative room. On entering this one we saw luggage and clothes on one of the beds so hastily closed the door and fled! Needless to say we then left!

Horrid in all respects

Howard Johnson, Spearfish SD: A good experience

by kop-queen

Having walked out of the motel we had booked, and having found our next choice to be fully booked, we were relieved to find this one had a room available. Thankfully this provided excellent accomodation and service.

There is a small indoor pool but sadly it was not open early enough in the morning as I was looking forward to a nice swim before breakfast.
