Corn Palace
by Koleno
Corn Palace The Corn Palace was created in 1892. Settlers would display there harvest on the exterior of the building to show the fertility of the South Dakota's harvest. They created murals made of corn, grass, gran, straw and more. FREE ADMISSION.
Each year the exterior is recreated with new murals. We enjoyed the pictures of each Corn Palace located along the walls inside the Corn Palace.
Today the Corn Palace host community and sporting events. The Corn Palace stands as a tribute to the agricultural hertiage of South Dakota. FREE ADMISSION

"South Dakota, last of the unspoiled places"
I was on my way to the Reservation of the Yankton Sioux Indians at Wagner when my friend suggested we stop here, as they wanted to shop for some household objects. Then we went to the Chinese restaurant nearby. By the tasteof it I thought it was not chinese, it became soon evident since the owners were from Battanbong in Cambodia, Khmer people. I admire them, from Battambang to Mitchell south Dakota which is as exotic sounding in Asia as Battambang is in south Dakota
"Very friendly people"
I was wandering around the vat Menards home store here and i couldnt get over the friendliness of the people both the staff and the visitors.
"A chance encounter with some Cambodians in Mitchel"
The staff at the restaurant was astounded when i told them that i had been to Cambodia a few times. at first they didnt believe me and then one by one and shook my hands. for once, for these exotic people of south dakota I became the exotic one..

I recently got the opportunity to play tourist all by myself for a day in Mitchell, SD. It is a town that draws a lot of tourists in the summer.
This map is available all over Mitchell. It is nice to help you figure out where you are and where you what to go. On the back is listed all the motels, campgrounds, B&B's and restaurants. It is free and distributed by the Corn palace Convention & Visitors Bureau. Their web site is www.cornpalace.com.

1890s home of one of Mitchells' founding citizens.
Interior of one room school house. Children from 1st grade to 6th or 8th grade all learned in this one room. The older students helped with the younger ones. And the teacher usually boarded with one of the students' families.
Country Church. It along with the school, and the 1890s house were all moved to this site. The church was still in use until about 15 years ago. The preachers were mostly seminiar students from Dakota Weslyen College where the church is now.
