As Corny as Kansas in August!

by yooperprof

"Or should that be South Dakota in June?"

America's one and only Corn Palace is the pride and joy of Mitchell, South Dakota.

It's a bit like Brighton Pavilion in England, only it's decorated with corn husks and stalks. Every year there's a different theme chosen. When I visited the theme was "Salute to Rodeo."

The PRCA is the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.

I bet you didn't know that.

Mitchell--small town South Dakota

by JennJenn

"Corn Palace 360"

City of the Corn Palace and really bizarre statues around town. Can you handle it?

"The State's Largest Bird feeder"

The Corn Palace is the biggest tourist attraction in Mitchell. People flock to the down town, er.. Uptown, just to have their picture taken in front of it.

I lived here for nearly a year, so check out Mitchell through all seasons on my pages.

Inside th Archeodome

by BLSM

As you walk in to the Archeodome you see a big hole of dirt surrounded by a catwalk that surrounds the dig site while arching upward to the classroom/offices. Visitors can stand on the catwalk and look down on the dig area. This picture is looking down from the center of the walkway.

This is another view of the current work from the level of the lab. Visitors are not allowed on the dig floor. This is as close as a visitor can get. You can get an idea various levels of the excavation.

this is a view of the Lab area. When I visited there researchers were at another site so the lab was accessable to visitors.

Just in front of the entrance to the Archeodome is this Sculpture. It is named "Flame of Wisdom" by Leonardo Nierman. It was presented in 1999.
