Highway 16 connects Rapid City...

Highway 16 connects Rapid City to the Black Hills area, and there are many little tourist attractions along this road near the city. I remember a human maze that was never open when I was there. There are many places selling 'Black Hills Gold,' and the little trinkets are cute enough to be one of several Christmas gifts for family members. I also remember a couple of putt-putt places there. I played one of them one night on my way back to Hill City from having to replace something that had broken. It was a tough course because it would have been easy if I could putt straight. I can't, so I was all over the place. Still, it was fun.

Still in the process of being made. But worth a visit. If you are a frequent visitor, it's great to see how much progress has been completed each time. I went in 1991 and 2000. In that time, only the face has been partly done!!!!

The most obvious thing to do in Rapid City, South Dakota is to see Mt Rushmore. Since we were there in the summer, we knew it would be very busy. We left early one morning to arrive at the monument just after it opened. It was a glorious sunny day - perfect viewing. The crowds were only just starting to arrive so we got there at the right time. The complex has a new parking area which costs $8 to get into. You get a ticket which is good for one year. There is other parking which is free, but you will not be able to get too close to the monument.
I thought it would be a bit of an anticlimax to see something which is so famous but I must admit, I was impressed. The surrounding countryside is just as spectacular and very peaceful (before the crowds arrive).
The photo shows the monument but the sky is very dark. For some reason, that is the way it scanned. But it was a gorgeous day and the sky was really an intense blue.
