Travel Tips for Rapid City

Badlands National Park

by Toughluck

East on I-90 is Badlands National Park. Best known for being blazing hot, it is the home of fossils from the Cenozoic era (that the large mammals, after the dinosaurs died off). It is a broken rugged line of cliffs facing south into the Sioux Reservation. Here the buffalo still roam and prairie dogs have colonies tucked away in the grasslands.

See my Badlands National Park tips.

Wind Cave National Park

by Toughluck

Located on the southern flanks of the Black Hills, Wind Cave appears on the surface as a beautiful rolling prairie. Deep underground is a network of tunnels, carved over the centuries by running water. Take a fully lit tour of the main cave or take the historical tour using lanterns. Either way, you'll find that the intricate design of the cave and it's cool interior a contrast to the grasses above.

Don't forget to see the buffalo! Usually, that's not a problem as the buffalo find you. It's the only campground I know of where the fence is to keep the animals out and the people in.

WFTR's new Rapid City Page

by WFTR

I realized that I've just added pages for all kinds of smaller towns in western South Dakota and neglected to mention Rapid City. Rapid City is the largest city in the area and the only "real" city in many people's eyes. In fact, New Yorkers probably wouldn't even consider it to be a city. I haven't spent that much time in the city, but I wanted to mention it. Rapid City has malls, restaurants, hotels, motels, and anything else that one could need. When I visit the Black Hills, I go to Rapid City if I need something that isn't available at Wall or Hill City.
