I would just check the weather forecast before you go so you know what to expect when you get there. I will be there the end of this month and beginning of July, and so far the weather looks like it will be good.

GO IN AUGUST

SD is in the midst of a drought and the chance of any 'rainy season' are in serious doubt. It is hotter than hades in July so I would choose August for that reason. But if you like to see tens of thousands of bikers July is the time to go since it corresponds with the Sturgis Bike Rally and many choose to take a ride in the hills.

MY MISTAKE!! The rally is August 7-13th. Lots of bikers around which is exciting BUT all the hotels are booked and the ones that aren't double and triple their prices that week.

Travel Tips for Rapid City

Four Presidents

by KaiM

Mt.Rushmore is the No. 1 attraction of the region. The stone heads of George Washington, Abe Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt and Thomas Jefferson are impressive. No entry fee, but parking at the main lot is expensive. There is a possibility not to pay the parking fee. Coming from Rapid City you can leave the main road about 700 feet before the main parking area. A small road leads to a small parking lot. If I remember it right, there is a sign leading to the small area. Parking is for free there. You just have to climb some stairs to reach the monument. If you like ice cream you have to get one at Mt. Rushmore. I´ve never seen cones that big. I´m a big ice cream fan, but I wasn´t able to finish that one. And it wasn´t too expensive...

A monument for the Native Americans

by KaiM

Crazy Horse Monument is the antidote to Mt. Rushmore. It honors the Sioux chief who fought against General Custer and won the battle at the Little Big Horn River. An artist from Poland started the sculpture in the 1920s. Meanwhile he died and now his kids continue his work on Crazy Horse. The statue is so huge that the four heads of the presidents at Mt. Rushmore easily fit into Crazy Horse´s head. So far parts of the head and one arm are almost complete. Still a lot of work to do. Nobody knows when the whole project will be finished. On the grounds below the statue an Indian university will be built. At least that´s the plan right now. Great project. I visited Crazy Horse twice. Both times I had bad luck because clouds or fog were hanging in front of the statue. Still impressive... The upper photo shows how the statue should be when it´s complete.

Jurassic Park, South Dakota?

by yooperprof

The hills are alive. . .

With the sound of chomping?

Terry T-Rex here is a vegetarian, you can tell by seeing all the chlorophyll in his hide.

(Do dinosaurs have hides? Or scales? I can't say that I'm sure of the answer.)

Stegosaurus - always my favorite member of the dinosaur gang.

Terry, Stego and their pals wander the popular hillside known as "Dinosaur Park," overlooking central Rapid City.
