Fort Meade
by BLSM
The town of Sturgis grew from the camp followers and hookers following the soldiers who came to Fort Meade. It was the home of General Custer before he left for the Little Big Horn.
Now it is the home to a large Veterans hospital.
There is a nice museum showing the early history of of the fort and area.
There is an admission charge. It takes about an hour or so to tour.
Fort Meade and the South Dakota National Guard
by BLSM
Fort Mead is still used for National Guard training. In the picture you can see Officer Trainees doing some of their 2 week summer camp. As you drive around the post you can see many buildings that date from around the time of General Custer, although they have been changed to meet modern times. Some of the homes and barracks are still in use.

"Motorcycle Rally"
The first thing lots of people think of when they hear the name "Sturgis" is the Motorcycle Rally, and yes the 69th Annual Rally is coming up in August 2009. It is still huge and lots of alcohol is consumed and there is lots of noise; but it is more subdued than it used to be. It is still the place to be for bikers! Many come here well before the rally to enjoy the windy roads, beautiful scenery, and great bars.
"Main Street"
Most of the action is on or near Main Street.
"Temporary Insanity"
While there try out the newest bar in town, Temporary Insanity. They play good music, pour good drinks and it is partly owned by the very attractive, Keri. Tell her Jim said, hello.
STURGIS!

"BIKES ! BIKES ! BIKES!"
Sturgis was a fun experience. My husband and I went on his bike traveling from Colorado Springs east through Nebraska (how exciting that was..NOT) and up to South Dakota. I think Sturgis would be really fun with a very large group of friends to party with and get rowdy, but with just me and my husband (we can be quite boring) that party excitement wasn't there for us.
Sturgis is crowded beyond belief and though I am thankful for the experience I don't know if I will ever go up to Sturgis during bike week again, it's hard to enjoy the rides there are soooo many bikes it's insane! I would definately do South Dakota again, it's absolutely beautiful part of America.
"Riding is what it's all about!"
The picture on the left is a ride we went on through this road that was off the main road. It went through the trees and was really fun, and not very busy! Amazing.
"Interesting things to see!"
The picture on the right is a concept bike (I believe made by Dodge, the company that makes vehicles). In Sturgis just walking along main street you can stop in at different vendors and sites and see cool stuff like this bike!! This one had tons of horsepower and is very bizarre looking.
Sturgis-Home of the Motorcyle Rally
by BLSM
Welcome to Sturgis. This is at the edge of Sturgis.
This is a view of the hills in Sturgis. I was there in mid July. The Motorcyle Rally is in Mid August. The town was just starting to wake up and get ready. It goes from a town of about 2000 to about 400 thousand or more for about a month.
So do not expect much out side of Rally Time.
