Travel Tips for Chattanooga

Russell Cave Nat'l Monument (Alabama)

by Toughluck

Don't think that this is out of reach. It's only about 35 miles to the west (I-24 for 26 miles, then US 72 south to Bridgeport (it's were the Union crossed the Tennessee on it's way to Chickamauga & Chattanooga - for the Civil War interested). Follow the signs west into a remote valley and there you are.

Russell Cave National Monument has been inhabited for over 4,000 years and maybe even over 10,000 years. Like Europes caves (So. France & No. Spain) which have cave paintings, this is North America's ancient peoples. They may not date as far back, but they're the root of the peopling of this continent.

Only Mexican Restaurant downtown

by soundsgoodtome about Q'doba Mexican Grill

This is the only Mexican restaurant downtown, located on Market Street right across from Jack's Alley. The restaurant is set up like a subway where you tell them what you want and they add all the toppings and stuff as you go down the line. Your food is ready instantly then you pay and sit or take it out, very fast service. I ordered the three-cheese nachos with chicken which I thought was very good. My sister did not like her burrito very much besides the rice, and my mom thought her quesadilla was alright. The food is not very authentic or the best-tasting, but it is not bad either. If you are in the mood for mexican and don't care to venture into the suburbs where Amigos is located, Q'doba will do, especially for a quick lunch.

Ruby Falls

by Jackiekg

Hours: 8am-8pm year round.

I visited here whilst on my way back to Nahville from Atlanta.
We decended by elevator into the mountain where our group met up with a guide who took us along the cave path. On the way we saw active formations which have been given names such as Cactus and Candle, Frozen Niagara etc. At the end of the cave we saw 'Ruby Falls' - a 145 foot underground waterful.
There are other activities in this area, which we didn't have time for - IN Aquarium, Rock City, Incline Railway etc.

Civil War - Bragg's Reservation

by Toughluck

Here is a general description of the events in taking Missionary Ridge and plenty of place to park and let the kids run. From here, you can walk back along the road to other signs, but watch out for vehicles. At times the road becomes very busy.

Located mid-way along the Crest Road, just above the tunnel on I-24. The easiest way to get here is by taking Brainerd Road (north of (-24) to the east side of the tunnel through the ridge. Make a left turn (regardless of direction you're coming from) and follow Crest Road, south (left on both routes). Follow Crest Road south, until crossing a bridge spanning a gap and I-24. There is a weird stop right after the bridge. Turn right (uphill), and around a bend. Bragg's Reservation is on the left.

Point Park BAttefield

by BruceDunning

This is not actually a battlefield as much as a defensive point for the CSA-Confederate States of America to defend the mountain during the attack by Rosecrans of the North. It had entrenchments for about a dozen cannon to be able to fire in all directions. The defense was of not much use and later moved toward Chickamauga. This is a US Park Service operation. The site is not a lot to see now. Some history and painting/mural is also in the Parks Service building. The overview from here is fabulous. They show the trenches, but a lot has been moved from the original defenses. Close by is Cravens House for tours, but it is closed in the fall through winter. The area is 3,000 acres and expansive. Admission is $3.00.
