Rafting the Ocoee
by anderschwan
This is the spot where the 1996 Olympic whitewater events were held. Paralleling hwy 64, the Ocoee river is part of the Tennessee Valley Authority's network of power-generating water works. 112 days a year, the water runs through the Ocoee, creating opportunities for rafters and kayakers to challenge Class III and Class IV rapids. There are many outfitters around the area, and it is about an hour and a half east of Chattanooga towards Ducktown. You have to do this at least once in your life - a lot of fun! for outfitters, check the website
Great dinner and show
by soundsgoodtome about Ichiban Japanese Steak House
I just recently ate here for the first time, and I liked it much better than Kampai Tokyo japanese steakhouse. The food was different than other oriental restaurants I've been to. They used more seasoning and had more types of sauces to choose from. The best part about the Ichiban, however, was the show done by the chefs. This was also better than the other ones I've been to. The chef performed tricks such as spinning the spatula around a single finger, spinning an egg and then flipping it into the air repeatedly and finally on top of his hat. The most impressive part of the show was when the chef separated an onion into rings of different sizes, stacked them on top of each other in the shape of a cone, and then poured oil inside and lit it on fire so that it looked like a volcano exploding. When the fire went out, the onion cone smoked for about 30 more seconds just like a volcano does after it blows. It was really neat! The sign out front says they have the best chefs in town, and I believe they are right. I also recently just went to the other new japanese steakhouse called Shogun, which is located on Gunbarrel Road. The food here was also great, but the show, although good, was slightly less exciting. Also, the rice had a unique flavor that I didn't care for, so I had to use lots of soy sauce to make it taste good.
Jump on the Choo Choo

Doh!!! Well of course there's a choo choo, and you have to go, how can you come all this way and not take a ride??
It's really good fun actually even though I've been on loads of other trains before this place was really well organised and is a must if you have kids.
See Rock City!
by KathyW
This is a neat natural attraction, set atop of Lookout Mountain. Basically, you follow a route around the park, where there are some very interesting rock formations. At one point you cross a narrow swinging bridge over a deep gorge. (There is an alternate route, which my husband chose to take after making a false start across the bridge!) And then there's the famous lookout across the seven states.
You can also go through a fairy tale village inside of a big cave. This part is a little bit hokey, but my daughter seemed to enjoy it. There are also some costumed theme characters at various places to entertain the children. It's a nice detour for a couple of hours. I've been twice and would definitely go again.

There are many other things to see and do in Chattanooga. The riverfront area is very interesting. It features the Tennessee Aquarium. We haven't been yet, but we understand this is a wonderful aquarium-- freshwater fish.
There's also some great shopping in Chattanooga, especially in the old warehouse area near the Choo Choo.
