Travel Tips for Chattanooga
dayton tennessee
by doug48
dayton is the county seat of rhea county tennessee. dayton is located on US 27 35 miles north of chattanooga. of interest to the tourist is the rhea county courthouse which was the site of the 1925 scopes "monkey" trail. the trial was a publicity stunt to gain attention for the town. john scopes was hired to teach a chapter of a text supporting charles darwin's theory of evoluntion which was against the law in tennessee at the time. the famous orator william jennings bryan was hired as the prosecuter and the famous trial lawyer clarence darrow was hired as scopes defence council. the trial became an international media circus. over 200 newspaper reporters decended on dayton and trained chimpanzees performed on the courthouse grounds. the scopes "monkey" trial was the first trial in the united states to receive national radio coverage. in the basement of the courthouse is an interesting museum on the trial.
the courthouse is located at 1475 market street in downtown dayton.
Good local bar/restaurant
by soundsgoodtome about Pickle Barrel
The Pickle Barrel is a nice, small restaurant and bar with a good selection of inexpensive food. They have a large variety of sandwiches, including make your own, burgers, and chicken. The quesadillas are very good, as are the nachos with chili, which are my favorites. It is located in the tiny corner of one of Chattanooga's triangle buildings, and occupies two floors, with seating on the second-floor balcony. I definitely recommend eating outside when the weather is suitable. There is an old-time feel to this place that is hard to describe without pictures. The wooden door and latches on the bathrooms might sum it up enough. This is a great place for a quick lunch or dinner with the family, but after 9 pm no one under 21 is allowed in because thats when it becomes more of a bar than a restaurant. I highly recommend this place.
Lookout Mountain Has a Lot to See on Top
by BruceDunning
Lookout Mountain has a lot of history, mostly due to the Civil War battle that was on the mountain and surrounding areas. One monument of the battle position at the top is called Point Park. It was a defensive strategic entrenchment to fire cannon balls down on the Northerners. Also, Ruby Falls, a large cave complex is on the mountain, as well as Rock City which is a walk through huge granite rocks in a trail of about one mile. Then they also have a Civil War battlefield with toy soldiers, about 5,000 with lighted areas going over the terrain of the fighting.
Wine Over Water
by grishaV1
n event that I missed, because it takes place in September, is Wine Over Water" is a wine-tasting event on Walnut Street Bridge. Vendors set up all along the walkway and one can sample wines from around Tennessee as well as the world! You pay a fee of around $40 and get to sample all you like! Of course with this much wine being tasted, you will need something to eat, so food is also offered. It is a popular event because everything is really within walking distance downtown and north shore Chattanooga at the riverfront, so you can go around to any of the great eating places too! At the website, it will tell what day it is held next year.
Ruby Falls
by cfwestbe
This is a large waterfall from an underground spring that is located deep within a cave! You start at the entrance and ride an elevator down to inside the cave, then hike for about a quarter of a mile through the cave to the falls. You approach it in the dark. You hear the loud sound of the waterfall and can feel the spray on your face, and then they turn on the lights. WOW! You have to walk all of the way back to the elevator along the same path that you followed previously. There are 2 exits. One by riding the elevator back up to the gift shop. The other is when the elevator breaks down like it did on us. Then you get to walk out the other end of the cave along a section that is rarely traveled to an old entrance that existed before the elevator was put in. It comes out on the other side of the mountain and school busses are sent around to pick everyone up. What an adventure!! We got to see more of the cave than the other tourists!!
