My Favorite Downtown Eatery
On different visits to Chattanooga I have brought Karen, my son Gregory, my grandchildren, and my Dad all to Big River Grill, so I must like this place. It is a sports bar / brewery housed in an old warehouse in the heart of the riverfront entertainment district. I love the Hickory Bacon Burger with smoked cheddar cheese and sweet magnolia barbecue sauce. They also have pizza, pasta, seafood, chicken, steak and other offerings. Everything is good.
Also, they claim to have an "award winning" selection of ales and lagers, freshly brewed on the premises. I personally prefer the sweet iced tea.
The Longest Walking Bridge in the World!
Walnut Street Bridge is a favorite with locals and visitors, it was first made in 1890. It is the LONGEST WALKING BRIDGE IN THE WORLD! It attracts everybody, and why not, you get a great view of the city, good exercise because its a half-mile one way, and can kiss at the middle if you like:-)
From its blue metal and concrete span you can see main attractions like the Aquarium, Coolidge Park and up and down the riverfront, plus all the upgrades being made to the area. There is a strong movement from residents and activists alike to keep the area from becoming "overbuilt". Right now there is a developer who wants to build a huge hotel right along side the bridge on the north shore. It is greatly opposed because it will completely spoil the view, ruining the mellow lay out of the spot just to get some more tourist dollars. The city must only go so far, is what´s said. There is building going along up and down this area, condos and stores, even hotels but along the sides modestly, not a huge highrise hotel that obscures right in the middle! I signed the petition also and got my mom to also :-)
Rollerbladers, joggers, walkers, lovers, families, Goths, clowns, everybody comes here for the view, cause its cool place to hang out, beautiful place. Be sure to take a jacket or something though, because it is higher up over the water, even on warm or slightly cool days the breeze is very strong at the top.
We went up the lookout mountain which had a great view. There's an incline railway that takes you up so you get a good view as you're climbing up and down. There's also a waterfall inside the mountain called Ruby Falls and Rock City Gardens.
Creative DIscovery Museum
The Creative Discovery Museum is a museum for kids. It offers hands on exhibits from water fun to digging for dinosaur bones. In the upstairs section, there are reading areas, a real bee hive and a tower you can climb. Also on the top you can go out on the roof and play as well.
It's a good place to let your kids run wild and if they aren't careful, they might learn something!
