Wine over Water
by anderschwan
I love this festival. Every fall, on the Walnut Street pedestrian bridge, over 100 wineries offer tastings in the Wine over Water Festival. This year it will be held on October 4th, 2003. Some of our best local restaurants offer food samples and there is live entertainment. The cost is $40 - but that is for ALL YOU CAN DRINK! The Lost Sea

The lost sea is an incredible underground lake (America's largest) inside a cave outside of Sweetwater, TN. The tour takes place on a Glass Bottom Boat. It's pretty cool - but I'm a cave geek so I really like that sort of thing. The lake, covering 4 1/2 acres, is recognized by the U.S. Department of the Interior as a Registered National Landmark.
I think it was also in the Guiness Book as the world's largest underground lake. I borrowed this picture from the website...
Downtown and Nearby Attractions
by elmendorfs
Downtown Chattanooga is full of things to do. Aquarium & IMAX, Discovery Museum, River Walk & Walnut St. pedestrian bridge over the TN river, Art District & Sculpture Garden, Hunter Art museum, Coolidge Park and 1800s restored carousel, Southern Belle riverboat and lots of restaurants within walking distance from free trolley. Within 10 miles are Lookout Mountain attractions including: The Incline Railway (very steep cable/rail train that goes up the side of Lookout Mt), Ruby Falls (an interesting waterfall inside an otherwise unremarkable cave), Rock City (a uniquely landscaped labyrinth of trails through natural rock formations with panoramic views of the valley and city, seasonal themes all year), Point Park (military park, provides the most scenic view of the city), Raccoon Mountain recreation area (picnic/play/recreation area built around a pumped storage lake that is part of the TVA power system, scenic views of lake and TN river gorge) , Chickamauga National Battlefield (large historic military park with unique observation tower, wooded trails, and open fields)

Ruby Falls
by PinkFloydActuary
This is your run of the mill cave tour, culminating in a huge underground waterfall. You start with a short video which gives the history of the cave, and follow with a hike down past cave formations towards the waterfall. I found the guide to be knowledgable and humorous. He also was willing to take pictures of anyone who wanted one. The cost is pretty comparable to many of the cave tours we've been on across the country, and the waterfall is a unique feature. Definitely worth this cool time (about 1.5 hours) underground, especially on a hot day.
Note: strollers not allowed. Tours run 8:00-8:00. Avoid the crowds by going earlier in the day.
Chattanooga Tip

Here's another perspective of the view from Lookout Mountain. The countryside is really beautiful! That's my dad and I on the platform... this photo was taken by my husband. Remember, he didn't want to go across the bridge-- he also didn't want to stand on that little platform, which is hanging out over the abyss!
