Travel Tips for Franklin

missing the gym and/or the pool while traveling?

by susiemargare

the williamson county parks and recreation department has a terrific recreation center just about two miles north of downtown franklin.

nonresidents can pay $3/day to use everything, which includes an indoor track (14 laps is one mile), basketball/volleyball courts, racquetball courts, free-weight rooms, exercise and weight/strength training machines, indoor and outdoor pools, and daily aerobics classes (extra $5 walk-in fee per class).

the tennis courts are free and lighted until 10 pm.

there is a very small concession stand at the outdoor pool.

if you are over 55, i think you pay $2/day.

you need soft-soled shoes for the indoor track.

you need towels (and toys or rafts if you want them) for the pools.

they have locker rooms with showers; i think you have to bring your own soap/shampoo and towels. they also have lockers, for which you bring your own lock.

other than the things listed above, they provide all the equipment.

they have child-care service for kids from 6 wks to 9 yrs old; the service allows 12 kids maximum and is first-come, first-served. it is available on monday thru thursday, 8-11:30 am and 4:30-7:30 pm; on fridays, it is available only 8-11:30 am. this is free, but it is not a general babysitting service -- you have to be at the recreation center while your child is being babysat.

the recreation center is open on monday thru friday, 6 am to 9 pm, on saturday 8 am to 6 pm, and on sunday 1 pm to 6 pm.

the address is 1120 hillsboro road, franklin, TN, 37069, phone 615/790-5719. actually, though, you have to turn onto fulton greer lane (there is a light at the intersection of hillsboro road and fulton greer lane), then go to the end of the street.

"100 years and a few short miles from Nashville"

by TravellerMel

"Historic Times"

Franklin is a charming, historic, and sophisticated destination located just “100 years and a few short miles from Nashville.” It attracts visitors from across the nation with its unique blend of small-town charm, big-city amenities, and significant Civil War historic sites. Most recently, Franklin’s visibility has increased worldwide through the publication of the New York Times Bestseller, Widow of the South, which is based on the Civil War’s epic Battle of Franklin.

Home to the Stones River National Battlefied, the National Park Service has one of the nicest visitors' centers I have seen, and a wonderful tour of the battlefield, whether you decide to drive, walk, or bike.

"Modern Times"

Today, Franklin is also a major shopping mecca (the expansive Cool Springs Galleria), and site of several festivals throughout the year. I'm particularly looking forward to the Rubber Duck Derby in September!

Recently, Franklin, TN was listed as a recommended place to visit in the bestselling book "1000 Places in the U.S and Canada to See Before You Die" as "Franklin, Civil War History in a Preserved Corner of the South". Copies of the travel book are available through your local bookseller.
