wedding chapels galore!
i haven't ever been to Las Vegas, but i think Gatlinburg isn't too far behind in the amount of wedding chapels you can find in one tiny little place. if you want to elope, i guess you could come here...

i am planning on a trip to tn - gatlingburg area for the 4th of july weekend. should i rent a cabin (if still available) in gatlingburg, sevierville or pigeon forge?
we have a number of children (3-6yrs old) and about 15 adults - where is the ideal place to rent a cabin ie allowing for childrens activites etc.

We got to Gatlinburg every chance we get. We started out staying in hotels but have discovered after having a baby, that cabins are the way to go. We have stayed at many different places. The good cabins have fully supplied kitchens. If u get a cabin/chalet be sure to take laundry detergent..they usually only give you 1 or 2 packs. Be sure to look at the pics online before booking and make sure the cabin is what you expect. So far we havent had any problems and most places are exactly what you see. We have heard stories of things not working etc. but the bigger name rental companies are quick to fix problems. Know that anything on ski mtn road is on the side of a hill....but u may see lots of wildlife. Anything outside town requires lots of driving and with gas prices you may want to look close to trolly stops. Here's a tip...find out how close the pool is to your cabin. My cousin went down in the summer last year and had to drive 1/2 mile to the pool...Not a good thing with kids! Also, 4th of July weekend...you may want to stay in Sevierville or tword the end of Pigeon Forge. We were down once on 4th of July. Leave early and plan on sitting in trafic A LONG time if u go in through the sevierville way. Leave early the morning you plan to leave....it makes a BIG difference. Try to get a local to give you some back roads too. We know some but I dont know thier names.
I second the previous post about allowing ALOT of time to drive in Sevierville and Pigeon Forge. There is basically one road and it is like a parking lot. The roads are lined with miniture golf places and As-Seen On TV stores. Not sure what type of childrens activities you were looking for? Dollywood is close-by.

Fall and Spring: Something warm along with something light.
Summer: Prepare for a typical Southern Summer Day. Dress light and airy. Doesn't matter...Your clothes will still stick to you. Whatever you normally take. The best you can afford.
We just spent our first Holiday at Gatlinburg and although it was very busy, it was worth it because they had a really great New Years Eve Party. The Space Needle had a big Ball Drop at Midnight with wonderful fireworks. It was really beautiful and we were able to watch it from our balcony at the Ramada Inn Four Seasons. It is really a good idea to stay in a downtown location if visiting at a busy time of year. Any other time I would suggest a cabin in the mountains. It slows down there after New Years and you have the place to yourself.
We ate on the balcony overlooking the main street of Gatlinburg...This was the one restaurant my hubby said he could go to eat at everyday. We got the Blackened Prime Rib Appetizer served with a side of Horseradish sauce...it was AWESOME! It was recommended by the waiter who was friendly. Hubby got the blackened prime rib po-boy, and i got 1 lb of crawfish with corn and potatos. Crawfish was a little spicy..like i love it!!...it was one of the best meal hubby and i have ever eaten!
Take some time to enjot the Cades Cove Loop Raod. It is a short drice from Gatlinburg and well worth the time. You will love the history behind cades cove. You can pick up a pamphlet just before entering at a stop on your left.
The Cove is best seen via Cades Cove Loop Road, which is a one way paved lane that skirts the bottoms of the forested mountains which surrounds the fields of the valley floor. The Loop Road takes Smokies vacationers on a historical tour of early pioneer farms, fields, roads and trails, leaving the Smokies visitor with the feeling that they have witnessed something wonderful and wholesome.
Cades Cove Loop is open to auto, bicycle and foot traffic every day of the year from sunup to sundown with a few exceptions. The Great Smoky Mountain National Park has designated that May through September on Wednesdays and Saturdays, the loop is reserved for hikers and bicyclist from sunup to 10am only. Auto traffic on those days is permitted in Cades Cove after 10am. Expect to spend one to two hours for the Cades Cove auto tour including a few stops along the way.
