Traveling in Sept.

by tfinley

My hubby and I will be traveling to Gatlinburg in Sept. (20th-27th) - just wondering if we can expect to see any of the leaves changing yet when we're there?

Re: Traveling in Sept.

Possibly- probably. It depends on the temperatures. It has to get cold enough at night for many of the trees to start changing colors. The higher the elevation, the sooner the change, at least in the Blue Ridge Mtns. -and the Smokies. You'll probably be right in the middle of the season- just hope rain and wind don't strip the trees. The sugar maples are the beautiful yellows, reds and oranges- dogwoods a rusty red, oaks often a bronzy hue.

Travel Tips for Gatlinburg

AWESOME

by runway146

The aquarium is a must see. Going through the tunnel with marine life all around you is AWESOME. The fondest memory I have is the clean crisp air and nice cool nights. What I miss most is the relaxing and calming effect Gatlinburg has on me. The breeze through the trees and the babbling of the river. I could just sit there for hours and listen.

It can get very cold during the Winter.

It can get very cold In Gatlinburg during the Winter months so remember to bring warm clothes or you may have to buy some when you get there. Don't let the warm weather one day fool you. It can be warm one day and in the twenties the next. Gloves and a warm scarf are a must. Also you will need warm shoes that are water repellant in case it snows. It can be very windy and a nice heavy coat will help to keep you nice and warm. Just bring any camera and take as many pictures as you can. If you are like me you will enjoy looking at them until the next time you can may a trip to the Smoky's.

Blue Ridge Parkway

OK, so this may not me an unheard of trip but I’m going to include it. I had a great time driving for a while on the B.R. P. in 2003 and I plan on doing t again in late September of 2004.The drive is beautiful. This is not a route to take if you plan on driving fast. This is a leisure drive toping out at 45. Believe me you won’t want to go any faster as you will want to get out of your car every now and then and take in the views. This time I will stop and make some hikes along the ways as well. I will try and post more info when I return from my trip. OH, take a drive to Cherokee, NC first and get yourself a bag of BOILED PEANUTS. You gotta try ‘em.

Steaks on the stream

by cardwatcher about The Peddler

This is a great little steakhouse. It is located on the back road in Gatlinburg right on the stream. There are tables all along the rear windows overlooking the creek. There are several different rooms all with the same sort of decor. Once you are seated a waitor visits to take your drink order and will provide you with a menu if you are not interested in a steak. If you are the peddler will wheel his cart to your table with 2 or 3 different types of beef. He will then cut your steak to order. 8, 10 or 12 oz. They also have a great salad bar with a lot of things you do not normally find on a salad bar. My favorite is the ribeye with sauteed mushrooms. If you are a beer drinker they offer several very good beers as well.
There is almost always a wait for this restaurant so make reservations or at least call ahead.
open daily at 5pm except on Saturday at 4:30

Ripley's Aquarium

by bigorange1103

The aquarium was opened in Dec. 2000. It is one of the best aquariums in the country. There is over 300 feet of underwater tunnel that you go through on a conveyor and a wonderful childrens area. I highly recommend visiting the Ripleys Aquarium!!!
