can anyone suggest a nice hotel or inn in gatlinburg?
never been there and will be coming labor day weekend. also, i realize it is a long drive from memphis but does anyone have a secret shortcut to make the drive shorter other than breaking all speed limits?

I'd highly recommend the Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort. Request a room in the Tower. It is a separate building that seems to be quieter, but has indoor pool/jacuzzi. Probably a good 4 blocks off the main strip.

Midtown Lodge is a great place. They have kitchenettes and it's right on the main road so you can walk everywhere! If you want something quieter, yet still close, Gatlinburg Town Square has condos and can be reached at: www.gatlinburgtownsquare.com. We've also stayed at Glenstone Lodge, which is also on a side road, but close enough to walk everywhere.
Another link that has a list of hotels is www.gatlinburg.com Hope this helps. Gatlinburg is touristy, but fun and the smokey's are a great place to explore!
Cheers!

Cataloochee
by monica71
Cataloochee is one of the places I really enjoyed visiting! Part of the adventure was just getting there. Since we stayed in Cosby, we decided to take road 32 and then the dirt road into the valley instead of the highway. The drive through the lush forest was fantastic and breathtaking at times. It took us about 50 minutes to get there from Cosby (we stopped few times for pictures).
The road is very narrow and very bad at times, but we managed to get there OK. On the way back we decided to take the 2 miles well maintained gravel road to highway I-40 and the Foothills Parkway into Cosby, instead of the steep (at times) dirt road and 32.
In the early 1800s all of the valley belonged to Colonel Robert Love, a post-revolutionary war land speculator. He granted homesteads to people who would settle here and improve the land. The earliest settlers that were found on record were the Caldwells (1814), the Hannahs, the Bennetts, the Nolands, the Palmers and the Barnes families.
In 1910 about 1200 people lived in Cataloochee. It is the best place in the park to see historic buildings from the late 19th century to the early 20th century.
Wildlife is also abundant here and we encountered a lot of it while visiting the valley.

Our favorite restaurant is the Pancake Pantry, located right on 'the main drag' in the center of town. The open around 6:00am and serve through 4:00pm I think. Don't head out to this place when you're already hungry. There's almost always a long line to be seated, which proves what a great place it is to eat. Prices are competitive with the area.
Get a good cup of coffee
by COFFEEBEAN52
Stop in at Coffee & Company in The Village shopping area. They have a full line of coffee & espresso drinks available. You'll also find the largest selection of coffee beans for sale in the Smokies (Usually around 70 to choose from) as well as other coffee related retail items. Smells great even if you don't like coffee!
Visit the Ogle Farm
by 807Wheaton
The Ogle Family was among the very first to settle in this area. Many of the settlers were Revolutionary War Veterans that had received their 50 acre tract for Patriotic Service during the American Revolution.
