Tubing in the smokies with Riverrats
by cardwatcher
My family is going to the Mt's for my parent's 50th Anniversary. We are spending a week together and decided that we would like to tube in the mts. This is something we can participate in - different ages and skill levels - the problem is finding a place to do it. The only place I have found is "river rats" Has anyone used them? If so tell me what you thought, please.
Thanks Cardwatcher

I can't say that I have used the River Rats for any whitewater or tubing experiences. However, my husband and I have taken white water rafting trips with the "official" companies on the Ocoee River in southeast Tennessee.
Those guides on the rafts are usually big, strong guys who know what they are doing. You have to remember that they are on that raft too and their life is in their hands also. I have never had a bad experience and have of course seen people get thrown into the river you hit a big rapid. The guides get the person back in the raft pronto!!! It is a thrill ....and one not to be missed.
Good luck....

Using Google, do a search using "sevierville tn rafting". This will give you a list of a number of different places. I have never been rafting, but have drove by the River Rats office a number of times. It has been around for a few years, that I am sure of. Enjoy yourselves!
Travel Tips for Gatlinburg
Buy the Smokies Starter Kit
by monica71
I can not say enough about the Smokies Starter Kit that is sold inside the park at the visitor center. For first timers is a must! The kit costs 5 US dollars and it comes with tons of information about the park and things to do. It is really something you should consider getting if you want to make the best out of your vacation in the area.
The kit contains the following: Trail Map, Day Hikes Map, Auto Touring Map, Newfound Gap Road Auto Tour Booklet, Clingmans Dome Booklet, Cades Cove Tour Booklet, Laurel Falls Nature Trail Guide and several safety instructions fliers that will make your visit a pleasant one.
It Depends On The Time of Year
by RVRoller
If you're a backpacker you know what to bring. If you are in a car whatever you like. Fall and Spring: Warm clothes along with some spring clothes.
Summer: Something appropriate for a Southern Summer...Light and Airy. Whatever you normally use or take. I would bring insect repellent for the summer and if you're backpacking don't forget the mole skin. The best you can afford!
Hike Mt. LeConte
by vhasouth
If you're of the looking for a long, breathtaking hike, then try the hike to Mt. LeConte Lodge. Depending on your starting point (Motor Nature Trail, Clingman's Dome or Newfound Gap) you are guaranteed views that are spectacular. If you plan your trip far enough in advance, spend the night at the lodge. Otherwise, relax on the porch on a very comfortable rocker, enjoy the view while getting a 2nd breath, then eventually start your hike back down!
The Pancake Pantry
by yallerhammer about The Pancake Pantry
They have been in business since 1960. The staff is extremly friendly. They also have a killer lunch menu. French Toast: Thick french toast, served with a cinnamon syrup that is unreal.
Morning Star: Hash Browns, topped with cheese, a fried egg, onions, pimentos, mushrooms, ham and green peppers. I also add a touch of Tabasco for a little kick. Comes with toast or 3 pancakes.
Chair Lift
by amybrooke
The chair lift is a Gatlinburg favorite. If you go there you have to at least do it once. It goes to the top of the mountain where you can get off have snacks, shop a bit, and admire the city. Give it a try its a relatively inexpensive ride. Once you slowly reach the top "smile"!! They snap a picture of you, which you can purchase in the little shop. You can go back down whenever your ready. Have fun!!
