A Perfectly Located DUMP

The Sidney James Mountain Lodge has a great location - 2 blocks off Stoplight 8 in Gatlinburg. Easy walking distance to the G'burg attractions. We checked in around 11pm (it is a 4 hour drive from Franklin, TN), and the man who checked us in stated that, since we booked through a 3rd party, we were given the "basic" room, and we could upgrade if we liked. He said that most people who look at the room come back and want an upgrade. That made us nervous, but we were not here for a romantic weekend away; we came to hike, so we just needed a clean, safe place to store our stuff and to sleep. Well, at least it was safe...

The room is in serious need of updating. The faux wood fixtures (A/C cover, etc) were peeling apart, there were marks and gouges in the walls (see photo), the bathtub needs to be refinished (see photo), and there were disgusting stains on the box spring (see photo). There were only two pillows, and they were so flat, it was like we had none.

The day we checked out, we noticed there was what we percieved to be a bullet hole through the front door - or else it was a peephole. Either way, we were creeped out.

We are not prissy - we don't need the lap of luxury wherever we go, but we would NOT stay here again.

Unique Quality: There are two pools (one indoor, one outdoor), and the rooms have a mini-fridge and microwave. Great location - two blocks from main drag of Gatlinburg, one block from restaurants.

Infected HOT TUBE

The hotel was awful and the room keys are used over and over and does not provide any protection. If you lose your room key and some one else find it they can easily break into your room. Besides, that my family had to go to the doctor and get medication after receiving a rash and infection from there hot tube.Think twice about staying here. Also, its a mile and a half walk to the strip. I will never go back here and would advise others to do the same.

Check room before paying

We saw good reviews, so made phone reservation for within 10 days' stay. We arrived, paid up front as we usually do, but our trip to the room showed dingy dark hallways, marginally clean overall, pool chlorine smell very strong, even away and up a floor, and a view of the parking lot and construction across the road. We decided not to stay, and went directly downstairs and told them why. We have never done this before and have traveled alot over many years. They said they had no other rooms, but only credited us one night and have fought the other night. Capital One has been with dispute for 4 months...but the clerk said, it doesn't matter, we always win... meaning they were going to get money from us no matter what and they really didn't care if we were satisfied or not. We were not belligerant or anything else. Sidney James staff was very rude and did not care. We found another place we had stayed before within 30 mins fortunately and had a wonderful stay there. We like to try different places since we visit Gatlingburg frequently. Take it from us....there are too many places there to waste your time or money with Sidney James Mountain Lodge!

Not a bad place to stay

We chose this place because of the creekside rooms that are available.
Our room, although having a pretty view of the creek, was a little worn down.
It did appear as if the hotel was going through a remodel though.
We did enjoy our stay here and would come back.
The pool area was newly fixed up and was great!
Parking was tight, but we always had a spot nightly and our car was safe and not tampered with.
The room had a mini refrigerator.

Unique Quality: Pool area is great, especially for children.
Nice views.
Walking distance to a pancake house, mexican restaurant, and a mini mart.
Close to Smoky Mountain National Park entrance and most other area attractions.
The creek sounded wonderful as we slept!

Awesome indoor pool, right on the river

I've stayed here many times.

The location is great, views are great! It's not the cleanest place on the earth (not a freakin Hilton or anything) but it's different. And, location location location...

Unique Quality: It's got an awesome cave-like indoor heated pool, hot tub, sauna... nice outdoor pool, and private balconies right on the stream. You can walk to the Pancake Pantry from here, walk to No Way Jose's (a funky little Mexican restaurant that serves margaritas by the pitcher), and the aquarium.

We like the Sidney James Motor...

We like the Sidney James Motor Lodge on Airport Road. It's at the edge of town so the traffic is minimal. There's a mountain stream that runs behind the Lodge. In addition to the Motel, they have two cottages that sit away from the main building. One has a hot tub on the porch. A very nice way to work the kinks out after a day's worth of hiking, or shopping! There's an indoor and outdoor pool and a hot tub and cafe. I highly recommend this place for couples and families.
We paid $120.00 per night for the two bedroom cottage which has a full kitchen, living room with fireplace, two bedrooms, and a private porch with your own hot tub. I think you can get a $5.00 off per night coupon off their web page.

Unique Quality: When we checked in, we were told that bear sighting are a daily occurrance, but I didn't see any the week we were there.

More about Sidney James Mountain Lodge

Very Poor Hotel

by A TripAdvisor Member

This was the worst hotel experience my husband & I have had. I requested a non-smoking room. The night before our arrival I called to confirm our reservation and confirm again that the room was non-smoking. I was assured it was. Guess what, when we went to our room it was.... full of smoke. We decided to not make an issue of it, since it was just one night. However, we then discovered most of the lights in the room were out and the gas log fireplace did not work. Disgusted, but too tired to complain, we went to dinner. When we got back to our smoky dim room, my husband sat down on the bed only to discover the bed was soaked from a leak in the ceiling. There was a torrential storm at the time, but management explained that the leak was from the water rising in the creek bed below. We asked for a refund, but we were told that as long as another room was available, no refunds would be given. I complained about the smoke in the room but was told the new room was non-smoking too. It didn't smell smoky, but the ash tray and matches make me think the Sidney James Mountain Lodge uses a lot of Febreeze. Will never stay here again.

Terrible!

by A TripAdvisor Member

My daughter and I stayed at the Sidney James in May 2003 , when we arrived the staff were courteous, but when we got into our rooms we were very disappointed. The rooms are so old and the outside door to the balcony would not even close. We almost left then but it was Memorial Day weekend and there were no places open. We won't be staying there again. Its time for that place to come down, so that something new can go up there!

honeymoon room nice

by TripAdvisor Member sdc2k

My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon in the honeymoon suite.
We thought it was very nice. Our balcony overlooked the creek behind the hotel as promised. We loved the jacuzzi and indoor swimming pool.
It was not decorated like it showed in the pictures, but it was very quiet and peaceful. After reading some of the other reviews, I do recommend getting a honeymoon room, though.

Leaky roof!!!!!

by A TripAdvisor Member

This place was awful. It appeared dirty and very run down. It stormed the night we were there and the roof leaked all night long..... drip, drip, drip.
I called the front desk and they said "Okay". That's it, okay!!!!!! What kind of response is that????????? We paid $100.00 to stay there one night, we had reservations for 3, needless to say, we left after the 1st night and found a nicer hotel for less money, the Fairfield Inn in Gatlinburg.
I will never return to this dump again and I would not recommend any else to either. Someone should call the health department to inspect this place!!!!!!!!

Hello

The Sidney James Mountain Lodge with 2 Bed Suites, I think is just what your looking for. The Sidney James Mountain Lodge is located down a side street, just a few minutes' walk from the downtown commercial area of Gatlinburg. However, it is in a quieter location than the many hotels that line the parkway. Partially bordered by a pretty stream and facing the mountains. Check at http://www.sidneyjames.com/

Best wishes

I am sure your trip has already come and gone. However, for your next trip, I would suggest that you look into Deer Ridge condos. They are up 321 a bit from Gatlinburg, but they are very quiet with an indoor pool/hot tub. Their price is very good for the amazing view you get. You can take the back road by Dollywood which puts you out on 321, go up the road to their entrance, take a drive up the mountain and you're there. Their website is www.deerridge.com. Hope you had a fantastic time!
