transportation from knoxville

by wagrob

Is there a good shuttle service from the Knoxville airport? Or is it possible to rent a car in Knoxville but return it in Gatlingburg?

Re: transportation from knoxville

unsure about the shuttle - check with hotel you are booking on that - but you can defin'ly rent and return in different locations....may be an upcharge for the service but you can do it - if not in Gatlinburg check in Seiverville

Travel Tips for Gatlinburg

A Great Place to Get Married

by Stephen-KarenConn

Approximately 30 wedding chapels can be found in Gatlinburg and Sevier County. It has become the second most popular place to get married in America, surpassed only by Las Vegas. The chapels and the services they provide can vary widely in cost and quality. Some people walk in and get married wearing shorts and T-shirts, while others have a large wedding party decked out in tuxedos and gowns. The price for weddings can also vary from as little as $50 to several thousand dollars.

A Tennessee Marriage License is required. These are easily obtained at any courthouse in Tennessee. To accomodate the demand, the Sevier County courthouse has set up branch marriage license offices in both Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. Karen and I chose the Victorian Gardens Wedding Chapel in Gatlinburg for our own nuptials on March 30, 2002 (see our home page). The ceremony was intimate, tasteful - and inexpensive. With the money we saved over a big church wedding we took a 10 day honeymoon to England, Scotland and Wales.

Packing List

by JuliaL

The weather in Gatlinburg can be very warm in the spring and fall, but quite cold up in the mountains in the higher elevations. If you're planning a picnic in the park, bring a jacket. Family Travel

Biltmore Estate

by monica71

Biltmore Estate was on my things to do list while visiting the Smoky Mountains since it was an easy 2 hours car ride from Cosby.

I was really impressed with the estate and the pictures are worth 1000 words. Make sure you get your ticket online before you go, so you can beat the crowds. Also, I highly recommend the audio guide for the house tour. It is money well spent especially for first time visitors.

You are not allowed to take pictures inside, but you can take plenty of them outside and in the gardens.

A Great Dining Experience!

by Sweetshrub about Applewood Restaurant in Gatlinburg

Your meal at the Applewood begins with a small glass of Apple Julip, a refreshing, non-alcoholic mixture of fruit juices, and a basket of apple fritters with apple butter. The meal just gets better from that great beginning. The wait staff is kind and friendly and want you to be pleased with your dining experience. There is plenty of variety to chose from in the menu. I arrived at about 5:30 p.m. and was seated immediately but when I left there was a large group of people waiting to be seated. It would be worth the wait in my opinion. By the way, there are some parking spaces available at the restaurant. If you get there early, you won't have to pay to park in a lot and walk. As I entered the restaurant, I asked a couple coming out if the food was good. They said they had eaten there three times and each time was excellent. The man opened his "to go" box to show me a pretty slab of pork loin which he recommended. Once inside, I ordered the pork and I was not disappointed. The serving was three nice slices, grilled over apple wood but it tasted like it had been marinated in cider. Whatever they did to it - it was great. My friend had the country fried steak with gravy. I had a bite and it was the best I had eaten. crispy but not greasy. Two side dishes came with our entree. The turnip greens are tender and perfectly seasoned. There is a good selection of vegetables to chose from. The portions are large and you won't go away hungry. I didn't make it to dessert. This was the best meal I had in Gatlinburg but not the most expensive.

Motor Nature Trail

by vhasouth

If you only have time for a short trip to the mountains, be sure to drive up Airport Road and do the Motor Nature Trail. It is about a 10 mile loop that gives you an excellent view of streams and overlooks without actually driving up into the mountains. It is a one-way loop so you're committed once you start. Definately worth the time. The place of a Thousand Drips is at the end of the Motor Nature Trail
