Just thinking ahead...about a trip to Johnson City and then to Mountain City and environs spending a bit of time in a cabin in the woods and a b&b. Just a couple of buddies wanting to get away and fish a little, bs a little, and relax.
Did a search for restaurants and pubs and got little. We like our beer and wine and general historic hangouts, but now I'm being warned that many rural areas are dry and the only "hangouts" are an occasional coffee shop/cafe.
Johnson City seems to have nice restaurant variety with downtown bars which seem to cater mainly to the college kids. But we wanted to get out into the less populated areas and meet the locals. What's up?
Yup, that's likely true. I lived on the NC side (Zionville) just over the TN border not too far from Mountain City. Not too much going on there. You might like to head a little further towards Boone, NC. Some places have full bar, some only serve beer & wine. You can buy your own liquor at the ABC store. Plenty of cabins available around there in Valle Crucis, Banner Elk, Foscoe (also fishing there), etc. Have a great time!
Hi Jim - forgot to mention that you can check out my Boone page for more info - http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/8295b/c937f/
Under hotels & accomodations is the agent I use to book cabins. Am pretty sure there is a bar in Sagebrush as well (just didn't put it in my tip).
Also ask if the stores sell on Sundays as I have needed to drive across borders on Sundays before
Tennessee also has a law that is a couple of years on the books whereby all resturaunts, bars, and stores HAVE to card you. It doesn't matter if you are 100 years old, it's the law. So don't be offended when you get carded.
Some of us might enjoy being carded Jim!! :-))
Yah but, you still look 18 Donna
Thanks for all the good tips...here in Elk Grove Village IL (near O'Hare [ORD]) we DO have a tiny elk herd and the same silly law carding everyone. The record is 96 years old at the Jewel Food Store!! Just to clarify, we're not alcoholics, but like to hang out with the locals and didn't want to get stuck in a wonderful location but have to drive 50 miles for a beer and some comraderie and fish boasting....can't believe my first response came from INDIA!! Virtual Tourist is truly EVERYWHERE!!
Thanks Griff, but if I'm looking 18, it must be a very old photo! ;-))
