Relo to Johnson City

by TNDreamer

Hi Everybody, I'm glad I found your site! I'm thinking of moving to Johnson City next month and have heard that the "tree streets" are a good place live. It's a bit overwhelming to move to a new city/state and not know anything about it. Are there any places I should avoid? I am a single mom with 2 teenagers. Will there be enough things for them to do? What do the teenagers do in Johnson City? Thanks in advance for your help!!

Hi - I used to work in JC and live south of town in Unicoi - my family now lives in Bristol and Kingsport.

The tree street area is nice is you want to live right in town, but it's a fairly small area bounded by less than nice areas. Also pretty close to ETSU, which may or may not be a positive for you. There are plenty of places within easy driving that are also good. The Tri-Cities area is relatively "rural" once you get outside of town limits - some places that are growing are North JC, Gray, Elizabethton, and Sulphur Springs. Unicoi and Erwin are beautiful, with the mountains starting right there.

I can't comment much on the teen scene - there are the usuals, movie theater, mall, shopping. If they're interested in karate at all, go to Curt Malyar's studio - he's the best! Overall JC and the rest of the Tri-Cities is, again, pretty rural, so for "city" stuff kids head the two hours to Knoxville I would guess. There are concerts at Freedom Hall, though.

Some helpful info for you - the local papers are the Johnson City Press, Bristol Herald, and Kingport Times - if you do a google search of them you can find some local info. Hope this helps!
