I lived in Memphis back in 1988. I have family there who could answer better than I - but here goes. The Graceland tour (Elvis home) is worth visiting. I don't know if that is the extravaganza tour but the Graceland tour gets you in parts of his home.
The best month would be May because of the huge Memphis in May BBQ on the river. It has become a very popular BBQ competition. Think hundreds of people cooking on and with everything under the sun (i.e. entire pigs over a fire to huge smokers). May has other event (hence Memphis in May) but I don't know what they are. Searching for "Memphis in May" will get you hits. On a down note it can be crowded, hot, and humid.
Beale Street is somewhat popular. Kind of like a real small Bourbon street. I've never been there so if you want more detailed info I'd have to talk to family (who may or may not know).
I hesitate to recommend Mud Island but it’s a Memphis tourist site.
There use to be steamboat rides on the river.

Hi! I dont know what months have good flight prices from London to Memphis, but I am sure that will make a difference on when you come. But I dont really agree with the other poster. I have been to Memphis in May recently and was very unimpressed (and I am in my twenties). The crowds were completely out of control. They had booked good acts for music, but you could hear better if you sit in your car and listen to a CD.
Beale Street is actually a very good place to go. It is small, though, but depending on what you want to do you could have a good evening there.
Graceland is overpriced as far as I am concerned. And very touristy. But I have never taken a tour, that may give you something I never got.
RIBS AND BBQ! Eat plenty while you are there. There is a little cafe across from the BB King club on Beale St--I think it is called Music City Cafe or something similar. They have very good dry ribs.
Just remember, it gets hot in the summer--and it is generally mild in the winter. Beautiful in the Spring and Fall.
But dont be so close to Arkansas and Missouri and not venture out into the beautiful Ozarks. This is "Gods country", get in the right spot and you will feel like you stepped into a scene from the movie 'Deliverance'.

Travel Tips for Memphis
Beale Street Music Festival
by myrtle
Dress for the warm weather. Also, all bags will be checked upon entering the festival. The food will be very expensive. If you plan to stay all day there are plenty of port-a-potties, even though sometimes you still have to wait.

This is the pyramid that they hold their sports in. We didnt get to go but I loved the way it looked. By the way at that moment we were lost and drove by that spot over three times. So on the thrid time I took the picture. Im shooked that my front window was clean enough to see the pyramid. lol
Great live music
by myrtle about Blue Monkey Midtown
This is a great place to go hear some local bands play. I prefer Tuesday nights when you can go see Rusty Lemon play. They do some great covers and have some excellent original songs as well. You can hear covers from Pearl Jam, Weezer, Incubus, Pink Floyd, 311, Stone Temple Pilots, Radiohead, Coldplay, etc. The band typically starts playing around 10:30pm on Tuesday nights, but it gets pretty crowded. I would recommend getting there early enough to get a table, at least by 10:00. There is no cover during the week, but if you go on the weekend there typically is.
Don't forget to visit this 80's diner!!
by Nichole_Lawrence about Hard Rock Cafe
I really enjoyed eating at this restaurant because they had good food, service, and they had a mini juke box at every table that had all kinds of old music on it and you just put 50 cents in it and it played the music of your choice. My favourite dishes were the Ringo Combo:
A combination of our favorite starters. Handmade Onion Rings, Santa Fe Spring Rolls and Tupelo Chicken served with a trio of sauces.
Tupelo Chicken Tenders:
Seasoned breaded chicken tenders served with our homemade Bar-B-Que and honey mustard sauces. Served with french fries.
Some other reccommended dishes;
Homemade Hard Rock Cafe Nachos :
Fresh corn tortilla chips piled high with Jack and Cheddar cheese, homemade seasoned pinto beans and served with sour cream and jalapeños.
Southwest Nachos:
Roasted corn, grilled red peppers, black beans, mounded Jack and Cheddar cheese melted to perfection. Topped off with green onions and sour cream and served with a side of fresh made salsa.
The Best Dry Rub Ribs
by Hopkid about Rendezvous
Just a half-block down an alley from the Peabody hotel, Charlie Vergo's Rendevous is well-known among a large selection of Memphis BBQ eateries. Rendevous certainly has been around long enough (over 50 years) and many of its waitstaff have worked there for many years. Rendevous specializes in a dry BBQ which consists of meat that has a special seasoning applied to the outside which is then slow cooked to mouth watering perfection.
If you'd rather have your BBQ with sauce, you can order your ribs wet (i.e., cooked with a sauce). Rendevous also has its own sauce that you can add at the table. But I recommend at least trying the dry rub BBQ without sauce before dousing it. You may find that you like it better. I certainly did. It's a taste and type of BBQ that I had never before experienced so flavorful was the rub. And the meat easily came away from the bone as tender as it was. I had the full slab of dry ribs. Great taste/flavor and not greasy. Rita had the wet ribs which were also very good but I liked the uniqueness (for me anyway) of the dry.
Good and friendly staff and a fun atmosphere. The could use some bolstering of their on tap beer choices however. Dry rub pork ribs
