memphis to nashville

by chipper99

Hi. Wea re travelling next year to Memphis and want to go down to Nashville for a few days. Is Greyhound the best way to go as I dont think the train is even an option, or is it? Is the Greyhound and stations safe to use? Any ideas or comments appreciated.

Thanks,

Darren

There are no trains that operate between Memphis and Nashville. You should be OK with the bus stations as long as your departure and arrival are in the daylight hours. Sometimes the bus depots are not in the best of neighborhoods, but some U.S. cities have been working on upgrading their bus depots a bit.

If you can fit it into your budget rent a car or take a flight. The previous poster is correct, however,so if you go during the day you should be OK. Greyhound stations are never completely safe, but there will be better security than there used to be. If you do choose the dog(greyhound) you will, of course, have to utilize taxis and or busses. Rent the car.

Taking the Greyhound will take you about 4 hours,if you purchase your ticket on-line advance purchase ticket will cost you around $36.00. If you fly you are looking at $350.00 and up depending on class of service available for a roundtrip ticket on Delta.

Get a car at the airport in Memphis. You can probably get unlimited milage and you will need it in Nashville.

Travel Tips for Memphis

Goin' to Graceland

by Julie1and2

Cheesey? Of course, but you have to go to Graceland if you're going to be in Memphis. Follow the visit with a stop at Beale Street for lunch or dinner. I'm sure you've heard this before, but Graceland is TINY! They give you headphones that explain the rooms and you walk through at your own pace. I was dropped off by a shuttle at noon who was returning to pick me up at 2:30pm. I was done with the tour at 12:30pm! So I remember waiting for two hours for the shuttle to come and get me. (I'm still glad I went, though.)

Hot summers, cold winters

by myrtle

Be prepared for tons of humidity and mosquitos in the summer. It can get extremely hot here. I never understood how true that was until I took a trip to Seattle one summer. When I hopped off the plane upon returning to Memphis the humidity hit me like a ton of bricks. It can get quite cold in the winter, so bring a warm coat.

He lives!

Elvis impersonators and barbeque. Now you know you're in Memphis. Great audience participation and well-priced menu contribute to the success. A big draw since they pipe the music out to the street.

The service was iffy, but who cares, Elvis is singing!

Mud Island Monorail or Pedestrian Crosswalk

by dlandt

There are two ways to get to Mud Island. One is to take the monorail, or two, it is to take walkway. The first costs two dollars, the second is free. I wasn't too impressed with the monorail. there was no air conditioning, one set of doors didn't work, and the thing looked in general like it hadn't bee properly cared for since it was installed. It also shuddered to a lurching stop when the ride was over. Whatever you say about the vehicle itself, you really can't bea the views of the river. You get a really spectacular look at both the natural beauty and the city skyline. If you choose the walkway, you're looking at about a five minute walk at a leisurely pace and an elevator or escalator take you up there.

The best barbeque in the world...

by DrewV

The best barbeque in the world can be found at Rendezvous, just a block or so from the Peabody Hotel. We're talking top-notch dry-seasoned smoked-for-days baby-back ribs. Absolutely the best. Bar none.
The place is always packed, the decor is groovy old-school junk, and the folks are friendly. It's like heaven on a rib. Get the dry ribs. This is the authentic version, y'all. If you must, add some barbeque sauce on your own, but you won't need it. It's SOOOOOOOOOOO good.
