Christmas Lights near Graceland
by Elena_007
Right across the street from Graceland is the Heartbreak Hotel. They have a security guard station at the entrance for guests of the hotel, but there is a visitor's parking just before you get to the hotel guard, where I parked to take these photos, and went inside to find out more information about the hotel. Just be sure to check with the guard after you park, to let him know you won't be long. There was Elvis Christmas music playing outside and lots of fans in the sitting areas outside enjoying the view of the holiday decorations and festive lights. There was also a lighted harp disply next to the guitar, but I didn't include it in the photo.
For more information about the hotel, see the website listed below.
Visit Midtown Memphis. ...

Visit Midtown Memphis. Adjacent to downtown, Midtown is what Memphis is all about. Lots of antique shops and restaurants in the Overton square area, and grand old southern Mansions, with beautiful gardens. This is where the all the old Cotton money used to live. Also take a walk across the Auction Avenue Bridge just north of The Pyramid to Harbortown. Walk or Rollerblade along the beautiful paths that front the Mississippi, and explore one of Memphis neatest new housing areas. Have an extra day? Head down to Oxford Mississippi. Oxford is where the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) is and was the home of writer William Faulkner. Ole Miss has one of the most beautiful campuses anywhere, it was spared by Grant in the Civil war, while the rest of Oxford was burned. The main Administrative building (called the Lyceum) was a Civil War hospital, and was the site where US Marshalls dug in during a night of rioting in 1962 when the Kennedy Boys forcefully integrated Ole Miss. The columns of the building still bear some bullet nicks. Also tour Rowan Oak (Faulkners house), and walk around the town square. Oxford is 80 miles South of Memphis, and is well worth the trip.
Silky O'Sullivans on Beale
by Pamzam70 about Silky O'Sullivans on Beale
This is an unusual Irish piano bar. I say 'unusual' because the owner has goats out in the outdoor patio area...and they drink beer!! Actually, they aren't walking around among the tables; they have their own little fenced in area.
What's great about this bar is the 'dueling' pianists. They are great crowd pleasers, as they take requests from the crowd, and also play their own 'dirty diddies' and songs. It's a great time.
Silky O'Sullivan's is also famous for their huge drink (it's served in a mini-bucket!) called...I forgot. I think it's something like the 'Diver' or something (sorry!! Maybe I can't remember because I had one too many of them!!). Gotta try it...

You can't go wrong with ARBY'S!
by sarahbeth11 about Arby's
We needed a cheap lunch on Saturday. We had spotted Arby's on the way to Graceland, about a mile down Union Avenue. So after our disappointment with the Peabody ducks, we went on a little road trip! It's a little outside of the downtown area and closer to the..err...ghetto, but the place was beautiful. Perfectly clean, shiny restaurant. Memphis Redbirds memorabilia decorated the walls, and the whole restaurant was bright due to the floor-to-ceiling windows. Arby's never lets us down, and the Market Fresh sandwiches and curly fries were just what we needed. If you feel like you need to escape the crazy Beale Street atmosphere and return to reality, there's a place to do it! You can't go wrong with the Beef and Cheddar...but when you need something a little lighter, all of the Market Fresh sandwiches are excellent!
