Once in a life time
by TCBELVIS
Where do i start there are so many places to go to it has to be Graceland Elvis presleys home. Also Sun studios. and Beale street. My fondest memory was when I walked through the gates at Graceland for the first time and to be able to go inside Graceland it will be something i will never forget. I have wanted to go there since i was very young. I hope I will be able to go again some time.
Overton Park/Square
by dustmon
I lived close to this park, and walked in it probably 4-5 times a week. My wife was going to the College of Art during the day, and alot of times we would eat at one of the close-by restaurants in Overton Square. This is the largest park in Memphis and a really nice place to picnic, walk, bike, skate or any number of other outside fun things to do!
A really fun bar/club!
by sarahbeth11 about Club 152
In total, we went to Club 152 three times over the short course of our trip. This place has it all...tables and food in the front overlooking the street, a live band and a dance floor in the back, and a DJ on the second floor. The band on Friday was excellent - played a lot of modern, upbeat songs with a bit of a unique flavor. The club upstairs was packed. I'm not much of a dancer, but I had a fabulous time.
Saturday night, we went in a bit early to avoid the cover. Walked in and got a table, and watched an Elvis impersonator that was actually pretty good. He sang on the bar for awhile, which was quite entertaining. The waitresses here are SO friendly. I still remember their names! After awhile we left, and sucked it up and paid the $5 cover to come back later when people were dancing. A mix of all ages, but the later it got, the younger the crowd became. Which is understandable. This place has so much going on, you could probably go every day and have a different experience every time! Fairly casual, we wore jeans both nights. Some people were a bit more dressed up though.
Trolley
by myrtle
The trollies hadn't been around for a while, but since downtown Memphis has been getting a bit of a face lift over the past few years they decided to bring them back. I have yet to ride on one, but they don't really go very far & I don't find them extremely convenient. However, I understand they are super cheap. I believe you only have to pay 25 cents for a ride, so it might be fun just to try it. As far as I know they are still expanding the area to which the trollies will travel.
No pain here
by richiecdisc about Payne's
Payne's is exactly the kind of place you imagine when you think about Bar-b-Que and Memphis. It's Deep Down Home South incarnate. Housed in an old gas station, you think you've been transported back to the time when the people dishing up this soulfully delicious food had to ride in the back of the bus on their way to work. Don't worry, they didn't It's in the wrong part of town, that is unless you are looking for the best Bar-b-Que. Being from Philly, it didn't look that bad to me but I was glad we heeded local suggestion to eat elsewhere the night before and save Payne's for the daylight. It was was mid-afternoon so a bit late for lunch and too early for dinner so the place was empty on our arrival. We were greatly warmly a big woman who emanated the word Mama with her beaming smile. Sensing our nervousness, she told us what the had on at the moment and we opted for one of each, a ribs meal and a pulled pork meal. Surprisingly, no sweet tea so we had to settle for a soda. We ordered at the counter and picked up our little styrofoam to-go containers likewise so no tip involved and only $16 for the lot. The ribs were truly falling off the bone and the sauce was a perfect blend of tang, sweet and spicy. The pulled pork was a likewise heavenly concoction. The beans and a yellow mustard based slaw of some kind were equally tasty and perfect accompaniments for the meats done to perfection. As good as the Bar-b-Que shop had been the night before, this place blew it away and I was glad we chose to have yet one more BBQ meal before leaving town!
