New Year's Eve in Memphis

by Anaisa

Hi. On a whim, my husband and I decided this morning that we would go to Memphis for New Year's Eve. We don't care to do anything too ambitious. We'll fly from Washington, DC, to Memphis on Dec 30 and spend two nights there. I have a few questions:

1. What are some good dining places? Anything good from a real dive to a fancy place will do so long as it's memorable (in a good way).

2. Where could/should we go on New Year's Eve? Live music, dancing, whatever . . .

3. What's the usual dress code in Memphis? Coat and tie? Jeans? In between?

4. Anything else we should know?

Thanks!

1. I always take visitors to the Rendezvous for BBQ. It's down the alley behind the downtown Holiday Inn on Union Street. It's funky, but safe and fun. I highly recommend the dry ribs.

After you have the BBQ, walk across to the Peabody Hotel. The decorations and Christmas tree are beautiful. The clothing store is owned by Elvis' tailor. Nice place for an after dinner drink if you have any room left. If not, take a horse-drawn carriage ride around downtown. They're outside the Peabody.

2. New Year's Eve, just hit Beale Street. It will be jumping all night so don't plan to sleep. It's kind of a clean Bourbon Street. Lots of clubs and restaurants and great music in all of them. Lots of security so safer than most places. I think they usually sell wristbands for about $20 that will get you in all the clubs.

3. Memphis is casual. Jeans are good just about anywhere. Check the weather before you come as it can change quickly in the mid-south. It'll be somewhere between the teens and the 70s.

4. If you've not gone before, make a pilgrimage out to Graceland during the day on the 31st (about a 15 minute taxi from downtown.) It's a fun thing that everyone should do once. Buy the whole ticket so you can see his cars and airplanes as well as the mansion.

Hope that helps and you have a fun trip. Eat, drink, enjoy the blues, repeat.

We went to Memphis over New Year's two years ago. Unfortunately my husband got the flu so we stayed in our hotel on New Year's Eve night.

The Peabody is a fabulous place to stay. They offer high tea and some great restaurants.

Go down Beale Street and you will find no shortage of dining and live music. Graceland is great to see but very busy on holidays. Still, it will be decorated for Christmas, Elvis' favorite holiday, and it's quite nice.

Travel Tips for Memphis

See the National Civil Rights...

by noahsdad

See the National Civil Rights Museum. The exhibits are very informative and moving. The room where Dr. King stayed when he was assassinated is eerie--and sickening. Seeing the churches that sustained so many ordinary, courageous people.

The Jefferson Davis Memorial

by dlandt

This isn't too far off the beaten path, just a little small and non-touristy . The statue commemorates the life and achievements of Jefferson Davis, the first and only President of the Confederate States of America. You can find it in the park near the riverfront downtown.

Call a Cab!!!

by cckbp7 about Wet Willies

Wet Willies is a chain of bars that serve frozen slushies w/ alcohol. They have a wide variety of flavors, all of with are very good. Watch out for brain freezes though. Also watch out for the "Call a Cab", its named that for a reason. The bar itself is small but fun. There is also a two-way mirror that allows guys to see out onto the dance floor while they are using the urinals. Pretty funny.

Gotta have the dry ribs!

by bhalliwell about Rendezvous

This is such a Memphis tradition for me. This s one of the "dry rib" places. SOrt of hard to find, but worth it. No frills, but outstanding ribs. Gotta just get a pitcher or two of beer, cheese platter and rack of ribs. Fall off of the bone tender and outstanding!!!
Not to miss Ribs and beer!!!

Should be re-named CozyHELL's

by shekky about Cozymel's

The place has a great location !! great access

This place, now owned by a private equity group from Dallas used to be owned by Brinker International (Chilli's). I must say that this is the worse food I had ever had in Memphis. Watch out for the cerviche-I got sick as a mule. The INS should interview all, for Homeland security purposes !
