Graceland - Safety
Hi,
I want to take my mother-in-law to Memphis to visit Graceland, we are from Baltimore, MD. The problem is I have been reading some really scary things about Memphis and the area around Graceland. Could you tell me where I could stay in Memphis that would be safe? And is it safe to go to Graceland only during the day? Is the surrounding neighborhoods that bad?
I know that Baltimore City has some bad areas, but because I live here I know where you go and don't go. But I know nothing about Memphis and am a little leary about taking my 65 year old handicapped wheel chaired mother-in-law into a bad area. Please advise.

Not sure how much help this is going to be but I went with my mother several years ago and we stayed in town, just off Beale Street. Can't remember exactly which hotel, and wish it had been the Peabody, but we just drove to Graceland and other places of interest. Apart from taking the wrong turn almost immediately out of the airport and driving for hours around some questionable areas, Memphis was pretty easy to navigate.

Stay away from the Graceland area...it's the ghetto for real...I mean BAD
I wouldn't even stay DT Memphis unless maybe the Madison Hotel....check out EAST on polar and 240...mybe Embassy Suites, or the large Hilton, or anything on Wolf Creek Parkway near Germantown.....buy a gun too, preferably a Mossberg

Ok good and Bad areas. North Memphis and South memphis are bad including the areas around Graceland. East memphis is nice. Germontown, Cordova and Bartlett are all nice. Orange mound, Fraiser, Binghampton, anything on Lamar are all bad. The marriott downtown is nice. Avoid Graceland after dark. Beale steet is fun until dark when everyone is suddenly drunk. The zoo is fun our female Panda is pregnant and due is summer. Enjoy and email me if you want I lived there my whole life until May 1st when we moved to Romania. Have fun

I have been to Memphis twice in the past two years. The first time, we stayed at the Peabody. While nice, it is VERY expensive. This past time we stayed at the SpringHill Suites Downtown (a Marriott chain) and it was about half the price of the Peabody, I believe it even had free parking, it was very easy to find, right on the Trolley line, an easy walk downtown. The rooms were neat and the staff was very friendly and accomodating
As for Graceland, during the day when you're touring the place, I felt safe. But the hotels nearby are a bit skeevy.
